Tax Accountant (Mid Career)

About the Role
J.R. Helms & Associates, P.C. is a full-service accounting, tax, and business consulting firm based in Indianapolis. We’re hiring a Tax Accountant with 4–8 years of tax experience who wants meaningful client work, professional growth, and a clear development path.
This role is ideal for someone who has hands-on tax prep experience and is ready to take ownership of their work while continuing to grow in a supportive, collaborative firm environment.
This role requires sound judgment, curiosity, and the ability to think through issues—not just follow a checklist.
What You’ll Do
- Prepare individual and business tax returns (1040, business & personal returns, Schedule C, etc.)
- Prepare and post journal entries
- Assist with month-end and year-end close
- Prepare financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Research and resolve account discrepancies
- Support audit fieldwork (operational and financial)
- Analyze financial and tax data to identify issues, research solutions, and apply sound judgment
- Communicate clearly with clients and internal team members to resolve questions and gather accurate information
- Apply critical thinking to complex or non-routine accounting and tax scenarios
- Document assumptions, research, and conclusions in a clear, professional manner
What We’re Looking For
- 4–8 years of tax preparation or public accounting experience
- Experience preparing individual and business tax returns
- Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients and coworkers
- CPA license not required, but CPA candidates encouraged
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage priorities and deadlines independently

Compensation:
Competitive salary range of $44,500–$81,000, based on experience, with opportunities for growth, professional development, and performance-based increases.
