GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION: The Upward Bound Program is grant-funded through the U.S. Department of Education and works with high school students to help them prepare for post-secondary education. Throughout the academic year, students receive individualized advising and tutoring and Saturday college prep workshops once per month. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school and attend and complete post-secondary education. A significant part of our program is the six-week Summer Academy. During the summer, students take high school level classes at Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis that will help prepare them for their next year’s classes. Courses are created with the idea of giving the students a jump start for the next school year. During the six weeks, students take classes during the day and participate in enrichment activities, college tours, and field trips. The Upward Bound program at Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis serves approximately 60 students from Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center and Ben Davis High School We are seeking Summer Academy Instructors to teach the following high school level courses June 3-July 10, 2024: Core Classes English/Reading Mathematics Enrichment Classes Art African American History Computer Science Fitness Spanish Theater MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach morning courses Monday through Thursday 9:00AM-12:00PM Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions. Prepare course materials, such as lesson plans, in-class assignments, and handouts. Present hands-on, and innovative subject material that promotes curiosity and participation. Inform students of the procedures for completing and submitting class work. Return assignments to students in accordance with established deadlines. Prepare and/or proctor pre and post assessments. Provide SAT prep content to students weekly. Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers. Prepare and deliver lectures to students on relevant topics. Advise students on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues. Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction. Coordinate with program staff to provide individualized support to program participants. Other duties assigned by the Project Director. This is not to be construed as an exhaustive list. Other duties logically associated with this position maybe assigned. All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Upward Bound SUPERVISION GIVEN: N/A EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline from an accredited college or university and/or teacher certification in core content area. Knowledge of high school curriculum and subject competencies. Ability to maintain classroom management. Effective communication and presentation skills. Experience working with limited income, and/or students who will be the first in their family to attend college.
