Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Scholar Services, the Middle Grades Resource Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction, intervention, and support services to students with disabilities in grades 5-8. The Resource Teacher collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, families and administrators to ensure students receive the accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

The Resource Teacher serves as the case manager for assigned students and is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local special education requirements while supporting student achievement in the least restrictive environment.

Qualifications

Required Education and Certification

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Special Education or a related field.

  • Valid Georgia Professional Teaching Certificate.

  • Certification in one or more of the following areas:

    • Special Education General Curriculum (P–12) Consultative 

    • Special Education Adapted Curriculum (P–12) Consultative

  • Georgia Dyslexia Endorsement (FLD872) required.

  • Experience working with upper elementary and/or middle school students preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of IDEA, Georgia Special Education Rules, and due process procedures.

  • Knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices for students with disabilities.

  • Understanding of structured literacy practices and interventions for students with dyslexia.

  • Ability to implement accommodations, modifications, and differentiated instruction to support student success.

  • Ability to analyze student data and use progress monitoring to guide instructional decisions.

  • Strong classroom management and behavior support skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and administrators.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency in educational technology and data management systems.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all state and federal regulations.

  • Ability and proven ability to report to work regularly and punctually.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Intervention

  • Provide direct special education services through resource, small-group, and inclusion settings.

  • Deliver research-based interventions aligned to students' IEP goals and academic needs.

  • Provide specialized instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, executive functioning, study skills, and other identified areas of need.

  • Utilize evidence-based instructional practices to support students with disabilities, including students with dyslexia.

  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on assessment data and progress monitoring results.

  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes academic growth, independence, and self-advocacy.

  • Utilize instructional technology and other resources to individualize learning experiences.

IEP Development and Case Management

  • Serve as the case manager for assigned students with disabilities.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

  • Maintain accurate and compliant special education records and documentation.

  • Schedule and facilitate annual reviews, reevaluations, eligibility meetings, and IEP amendments.

  • Coordinate the delivery of special education and related services identified in student IEPs.

  • Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.

  • Ensure all compliance timelines and reporting requirements are met.

Collaboration and Family Engagement

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families of assigned students.

  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, services, accommodations, and concerns.

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure appropriate accommodations and modifications are implemented consistently.

  • Provide consultation regarding instructional strategies, behavior supports, classroom accommodations, and curriculum access.

  • Collaborate with administrators, counselors, interventionists, and related service providers to support student success.

  • Participate in Student Support Team (SST), MTSS, IEP, and other school-based meetings as required.

Classroom and School Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain appropriate student behavior and classroom expectations.

  • Implement school-wide policies, procedures, and behavioral expectations consistently.

  • Foster a culture of high expectations, inclusion, equity, and academic achievement.

  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school events.

  • Support school initiatives and contribute positively to the overall school culture.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.

  • Comply with all school, state, and federal policies and regulations.

  • Complete all network, district, and state reporting requirements.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Scholar Services or school administration to support the overall educational program.

  • Full-Time, 10-Month Position
