Manufacturing Engineer Intern

ITW Food Equipment Group
Charlotte, NC Intern
POSTED ON 5/17/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/15/2026
Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Intern to support the development and standardization of manufacturing and assembly processes. This role works directly on the production floor with skilled assemblers to observe, understand, and document step-by-step assembly processes into clear, effective Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

This is a hands-on opportunity to apply engineering fundamentals in a real-world, high-volume manufacturing environment—where your work will directly impact training, safety, and operational performance.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • Collaborating directly with assemblers and production leads to learning and documenting real-time assembly processes.
  • Translate hands-on work into clear, structured instructions for training and daily operations.
  • Document tools, materials, process steps, and quality checkpoints.
  • Capture photos and visual aids to enhance clarity and usability.
  • Validate procedures with production teams to ensure accuracy and practicality.
  • Incorporate safety requirements and PPE standards into all documentation.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and standardization.

What We Are Looking For

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Interest in manufacturing, production systems, and hands-on engineering work
  • Comfortable working in a production environment alongside hourly employees
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

What You Will Gain

  • Direct, hands-on experience in a manufacturing and assembly environment
  • Exposure to standard work, Lean principles, and process improvement
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Engineering, Production, and Quality teams.
  • The opportunity to create documentation used for real employee training and operations.
  • Insight into how engineering decisions impact efficiency, safety, and product quality

Why Vulcan / Employer Brand

  • Real Impact Day One: Your work will be used on the production floor, not just a project that sits on a shelf.
  • Hands-On Experience: Work side-by-side with experienced assemblers and see how products are built from start to finish.
  • Learn by Doing: Gain practical exposure to Lean manufacturing, standard work, and process design.
  • Supportive Environment: Collaborate with leaders who value Trust, Respect, Integrity, Shared Risk, and Simplicity
  • Career Foundation: Build skills that translate directly into full-time engineering roles in manufacturing and operations.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office and manufacturing floor work
  • Frequent interaction with production employees and equipment
  • Must follow all safety requirements, including PPE (safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, etc.)

Ideal Candidate

You Are The Type Of Student Who

  • Wants to get out from behind a desk and see how things are actually built.
  • Enjoys solving real-world problems, not just theoretical ones.
  • Can communicate clearly and is not afraid to ask questions on the production floor.
  • Takes pride in making things simpler, clearer, and more efficient.
