Duration: 10 Months (Long Term Contract)


Position Overview

The Teaching Assistant supports the Education Department within a juvenile correctional facility by supervising students and maintaining a safe, structured, and positive learning environment. The incumbent is responsible for supervising students in the classroom when the classroom teacher is unavailable and ensuring that daily instructional activities and classroom procedures continue as planned.


The Teaching Assistant works closely with teachers, school administration, facility staff, and other departments to support student learning, behavior management, and overall development. The position reports directly to the School Principal and performs duties with minimal supervision.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise students in the classroom in the absence of the classroom teacher.
  • Implement daily and weekly teacher lesson plans to support established course objectives.
  • Take and maintain accurate student attendance records.
  • Monitor student behavior and maintain a safe, orderly, and productive classroom environment.
  • Monitor student assignments and provide guidance to students in completing work assigned by the classroom teacher.
  • Maintain accurate daily student and classroom records.
  • Supervise students' daily work and assess individual student progress and achievement.
  • Provide support for classroom instruction and other educational activities as needed.
  • Effectively manage classroom supplies, equipment, tools, and other educational resources.
  • Follow established policies and procedures during critical incidents, including situations involving potential injury, escape, or property damage.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of student, facility, and departmental information.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and concise written reports in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide written reports and participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings as required.
  • Collaborate with other departments to enhance the educational environment and support student development.
  • Participate in faculty, professional, and departmental meetings.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, contractual personnel, interns, volunteers, and applicable public or private community agencies.
  • Maintain a professional and positive image of the facility and department when interacting with students, staff, and the public.


Required Skills and Qualifications

The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Implement teacher lesson plans and maintain continuity of instruction when the classroom teacher is absent.
  • Create and maintain a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment that promotes individual student growth and development.
  • Supervise students effectively and maintain appropriate classroom control.
  • Monitor student behavior, assignments, attendance, and daily activities accurately.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate documentation and reports.
  • Safely operate job-related equipment, tools, and educational resources.
  • Maintain and control educational department supplies, equipment, and tools.
  • Respond appropriately to critical incidents in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Successfully complete all required training and certifications.
  • Meet all applicable facility requirements, including successfully completing required drug testing.

Work Environment

This position is based within a juvenile correctional facility and requires the ability to work effectively in a structured environment with students who may have behavioral, educational, or other support needs. The incumbent must be able to maintain professionalism, classroom control, confidentiality, and safety while working collaboratively with education and facility personnel.
