What are the responsibilities and job description for the Network Administrator position at ITC?

Purpose:

The Network Administrator is responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring and maintaining computer networks, hardware, software, and other related communication systems.  This position ensures the stability, security, and performance of network infrastructure including switches, wireless, firewalls, routers, and bridges.  This position ensures the security of all PSU systems by implementing and maintaining security protocols such as wireless encryption, authentication, and authorization.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitors and manages the network ensuring performance and security.   
  • Maintains infrastructure systems by patching and upgrading firmware
  • Monitors Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) alerts for products and services in use by the PSU and takes appropriate action.
  • Designs and Implements the wireless network infrastructure.  
  • Segments network traffic where appropriate.
  • Maintains documentation of network configuration, operating procedures and policies.
  • Assists in Disaster Recovery planning and testing. 
  • Attends classes, seminars, conferences and reviews professional literature to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to network systems. 
  • May also include the duties and responsibilities of the Systems Administrator and IT Security Specialist.
  • Provides an example or trains other technical staff on operating procedures necessary to maintain proper inventory records and facilitate timely work order responses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of network architecture
  • A deep knowledge of application transport and network infrastructure protocols
  • Strong knowledge of wireless architecture including design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of firewall concepts and policies
  • Strong knowledge of network operating systems
  • Considerable knowledge of a variety of network operational problem determination procedures, techniques, and troubleshooting.
  • General knowledge of applicable federal laws such as COPPA, CIPA and FERPA

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or an IT related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or Associate degree in computer science, or a related technical field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of networking related experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of networking related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
