POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Human Resource Specialist is responsible for recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, compliance, training coordination, payroll support, benefits administration, and personnel records while maintaining confidentiality and excellent customer service for the Itasca County Family YMCA and a partnering nonprofit organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinate the full recruitment lifecycle, including posting job openings, screening applicants, scheduling interviews, participating in hiring processes, and supporting selection decisions.
  • Administer new employee onboarding, including completion of employment documentation, background checks, benefit enrollment, orientation, and personnel file setup.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee records and HR information systems in compliance with organizational policies and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Serve as a resource to employees and supervisors by responding to HR-related questions regarding policies, benefits, leave, payroll, and employment practices.
  • Coordinate employee benefits administration, including enrollments, qualifying life events, retirement plans, leave programs, and related documentation.
  • Support payroll and timekeeping processes by maintaining employee records, reviewing timekeeping data, monitoring paid time off balances, and assisting with payroll administration.
  • Coordinate and maintain employee training, orientation, and required compliance programs, including tracking completion of mandatory training and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with employee relations by documenting performance concerns, supporting corrective action processes, conducting exit interviews, and promoting positive workplace culture.
  • Monitor compliance with employment laws, OSHA standards, organizational policies, licensing requirements, and required workplace postings.
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute HR policies, employee handbook updates, and other HR communications.
  • Prepare employment verifications, reports, compliance documentation, and other HR-related correspondence as requested.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to identify workforce needs, improve HR processes, and support organizational goals.
  • Provide scheduled on-site HR support to the partner nonprofit organization, ensuring consistent HR services while recognizing the unique operational and regulatory needs of each organization.
  • Exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential employee and organizational information.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Human Resources function and organizational mission.

Employees and volunteers who directly supervise consumers will:

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend required abuse risk management trainings.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent experience.

· Two or more years of Human Resources experience.

· Working knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.

· Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

· Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

· Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

· Experience with payroll systems and HRIS.

Preferred Qualifications

· SHRM-CP or PHR certification.

· Experience in nonprofit organizations.

· Experience with Minnesota employment law and/or 245D licensed services.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· The work is primarily performed in an office environment, with the possibility of remote work when available and approved.

· Extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and reviewing documents are required.

· Must be able to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds as needed.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)

  • Human resources: 3 years (Preferred)
