Member Services Coordinator — Island Sailing | Portland/Vancouver Area Full-Time | Thursday–Monday | Base $40,000–$45,000 DOE Commission

First — Before You Apply

Visit our website and spend a few minutes on our Values page. We're serious about this. Our culture has been built deliberately, and it matters more to us than your resume. If something there resonates with you, make a note — we'll ask about it.

The Opportunity:

Island Sailing is a sailing school, racing program, and membership club on the Columbia River with over forty years of history and real momentum behind it. Under new ownership we've grown the membership base significantly, expanded our fleet, built one of the largest and most active racing training programs in the Pacific Northwest, and deepened our roots in the regional sailing community.

We're looking for someone to help us keep that going — and who genuinely belongs in this world.

This is a front-line role with real responsibility. You'll be the first voice many prospective members hear and the ongoing relationship for members already in our community. It blends relationship-based sales, member experience, and day-to-day operational support. If you're a sailor who's also good with people and comfortable in a sales conversation, keep reading.

Our Culture:

Island Sailing has worked hard to build something worth protecting: a collaborative, accountable, and genuinely welcoming crew. We're a small team running a large operation, and that means everyone's contribution is visible — the good and the bad.

Everyone on this crew shows up fully, engages honestly, and takes the mission seriously. Sailing has more than its share of ego — we've made a deliberate choice to build something different. The people who thrive here lead with humility, hold our values as a lived standard rather than a talking point, and make those around them better. We're building a crew culture of learn-it-alls, not know-it-alls. If your identity depends on being the smartest person in the room, this isn't your crew.

If that sounds like you, we'd like to meet you.

The Role:

Full-time, Thursday through Monday — our peak operational days as a leisure and instructional business. You'll work directly with ownership and a small, tight-knit team.

Core responsibilities:

  • Own the member experience from first inquiry through onboarding and ongoing engagement — phone, email, in-person at the club
  • Drive membership sales through consultative outreach, follow-up, and retention conversations
  • Manage and maintain member records in our CRM (Zoho); track inquiries, conversions, and renewal pipeline
  • Coordinate with instructors and operations to ensure members and students have what they need
  • Support event coordination and community programming — regattas, socials, racing events, club gatherings
  • Contribute to member communications — campaigns, social content, updates — collaboratively, not solo

This role is not purely administrative, fully remote, or a fit for someone who wants predictable, defined tasks. It's a sailing club: things move, and you'll need to move with them.

What We're Looking For:

Sailing experience is required.

We're not looking for an Olympic resume, but you need to have real time on the water — enough to speak credibly to prospective members, understand what we do, and genuinely belong in this environment. ASA 101 certification or equivalent demonstrable sailing experience is the floor.

If you also have sailboat racing experience, that's a significant advantage. Our racing training program is one of the most active in the Pacific Northwest, and someone who understands that world — the culture, the language, the draw — will hit the ground running in ways others simply can't.

Beyond that:

  • 2 years in membership sales, customer service, or a relationship-based sales role — club, fitness, hospitality, or sailinig environments translate well
  • Experience facilitating or supporting communities — and an understanding of the difference between building a community for others and being part of one yourself. This distinction matters here.
  • Comfort with content creation and basic design — drafting marketing emails, building newsletter templates, keeping social media alive and on-brand. You don't need to be a graphic designer, but you should be someone who can make things look good and communicate clearly in a visual medium
  • Genuine comfort with sales conversations — consultative and persistent, not transactional
  • CRM experience (Zoho familiarity is a plus; willingness to learn is required)
  • Strong written and verbal communication — you'll be drafting member emails, not just answering them
  • Weekend availability as a feature of this role, not a compromise

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Base salary: $40,000–$45,000 DOE — a livable, standalone wage
  • Commission: 10% of new membership initiations you close, paid each pay period on top of base — straightforward and uncapped
  • Crew membership eligibility based on performance, giving you access to our fleet
  • Crew members who don't yet hold advanced certifications will have opportunities to develop on the water as part of the role
  • A position where your work is visible, your contributions matter, and you're part of something with genuine depth in the Northwest sailing community

How to Apply:

Submit your resume and a cover letter telling us what draws you to this specific role and what your sailing background looks like.

We'll follow up to schedule a virtual conversation first. If that goes well, we'll have you down to the club.

Please don't stop by unannounced or call without a scheduled appointment — we're a working club and school and we respect everyone's time, including yours.
