What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Apprentice position at Isembard?
About Isembard
Isembard is a rapidly growing, software-enabled manufacturing company revolutionizing how high-precision metal parts are made—faster, more affordable, and more sustainable. We use our proprietary software platform, MasonOS, to drive advanced CNC machining for demanding customers in aerospace, defense, maritime, and other mission-critical industries.
Founded in 2024, we now operate multiple factories across the US and UK with ambitious plans to scale quickly. Our team combines deep experience from military, government, and successful tech ventures. Our mission is to forge industrial acceleration and rebuild the future of American manufacturing.
We’re looking for motivated, hands-on individuals to join as CNC Machinist Apprentices and grow into skilled machinists, setup technicians, or programmers in a cutting-edge environment.
The Role: Junior CNC Machinist Apprentice
This is a true apprenticeship program designed for beginners or those with limited experience. You’ll receive paid, structured on-the-job training, daily mentorship from experienced machinists and engineers, and support to earn industry-recognized certifications.
No advanced degree or years of experience required—we hire for attitude and aptitude and invest in your development.
What you’ll learn and do (with full support):
Machine Operation & Setup
- Operate modern 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC mills and lathes under guidance.
- Learn proper workholding, tool selection, and basic machine setup.
- Load programs, change tools, and monitor machining processes
- Shop Floor Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area (5S practices).
- Handle material loading/unloading, chip removal, and coolant management.
- Support production runs by keeping machines running efficiently and assisting team members.
- Machine Maintenance & Care
- Perform daily and weekly preventive maintenance: cleaning, lubrication, coolant checks, and filter changes.
- Identify basic machine issues (e.g., unusual sounds, tool wear) and report them promptly.
- Assist in minor repairs and learn proper spindle warm-up, way lube checks, and overall machine health monitoring.
- Quality & Inspection
- Perform in-process and final inspections using precision tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges).
- Gain hands-on experience with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and GD&T basics.
- Help maintain aerospace-level quality standards.
- Programming & Process Basics
- Start with editing existing CNC programs and progress to writing simple programs in CAM software (we’ll train you on industry-standard tools).
- Assist in creating setup sheets and basic work instructions.
- Automation & Modern Manufacturing
- Work alongside our software and robotics teams to see how MasonOS automates production.
- Get exposure to robotic loading, in-process monitoring, and predictive maintenance tools.
You’ll follow a clear progression plan with milestones, regular feedback, and opportunities to advance quickly into higher-paying roles.
