Dept./School:  iSchool Virtual Academy of Texas (Virtual - iSVA Home Office)

 

Position Summary:

The Director of Counseling is responsible for providing oversight and leadership to the counseling department including strategy development, program execution and team management for iSchool Virtual Academy of Texas grades 6-12.  Primary focus areas include class scheduling, academic counseling and personal graduation planning in support of students graduation requirements as well as college and career readiness goals.   The Director of Counseling will provide knowledge, leadership and collaboration of all policies and guidelines at the school, district and state levels to ensure the development, implementation and assessment of school counseling programs are in compliance and benefit all students.

As part of the role, the Director of Counseling will provide CCMR advising  for Virtual Academies.  Playing a key role in preparing ResponsiveEd students for postsecondary success by aligning academic pathways with Texas College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) accountability standards. This position supports PHS Online and iSchool Virtual Academy students, families, and staff in navigating graduation requirements, endorsements under House Bill 5, and seamless transitions into college, career, or military pathways.

The CCMR Advisor will work virtually with campus directors, school counselors, and district staff to ensure students meet CCMR indicators (e.g., TSIA2, SAT/ACT, Industry-Based Certifications, Dual Credit, College Prep Courses, AP, and military enlistment). The role also extends to alumni support, helping graduates persist through their chosen postsecondary pathways.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification, and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field (preferred)

  • 3 years experience in leadership and management (required)

  • 3 years’ experience in Texas secondary education; experience with virtual learning environments strongly (preferred)

  • School counseling, educational leadership certification (preferred)





Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

 

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills ensuring attention to detail. Familiarity and knowledge of basic “netiquette” for online and e-mail communication.
  • Must have familiarity with a variety of computer applications including Google suite of applications, Parchment, and college/career platforms.
  • Knowledge of and experience with PEIMS, Student Learning Management Systems and Student Information Systems.
  • Ability to create strategy AND execute the strategy including development, monitoring, adjusting, timelines and tracking.
  • Ability to create standard processes and procedures in order to run the department timely, effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and prioritizing tasks daily.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, office team, teachers, administration, and outside district personnel through virtual platforms and in-person.
  • In-depth knowledge of Texas CCMR accountability requirements and indicators.
  • Familiarity with House Bill 5 endorsements, CTE pathways, and P-TECH/Early College models.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Creation, implementation, planning, oversight and direction for the iSVA counseling program including: course placement/scheduling, personal graduation plans (PGP’s), endorsements, transcript building, data evaluations (test history, progress, TREX, etc.), graduation requirements and counseling guidance.
  • Support College, Career and Military Readiness initiatives to develop a post-secondary plan with various institutions and businesses to ensure graduates are college, career, military or work ready.
  • Collaborate with Texas colleges and universities to expand dual credit opportunities for online students.
  • Build partnerships with workforce boards, trade schools, and industry certification providers.
  • Create and maintain records for all enrolled students in compliance with all counseling programs and initiatives.
  • Individual and group supervision to school counselors in practice.  
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, selection, and training of qualified counseling personnel and making recommendations about placement, assignment, discipline and dismissal.
  • Develop and deliver training to counseling staff that supports professional growth and ethics, and a consistent interpretation of district policies and state laws and regulation.
  • Foster collegiality and team building among department employees; encourage active involvement in the decision-making process by all department employees; communicate expectations for high-level performance to staff; recognize staff achievements; and ensure effective and quick resolution of conflicts among department employees.
  • Serve as a liaison between counseling staff and operational leadership.
  • Research, recommend, implement and administer District and department policies and procedures that are in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Serve as the NCAA and College Board representative for iSVA.
  • Develop, plan, coordinate and administer credit recovery and attendance failure recovery for students enrolled in the program.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among assigned department personnel and campus administrators to enhance service delivery, program development, and customer satisfaction.
  • Comply with the Texas Educator Code of Ethics, ResponsiveEd Employee Handbook, the ResponsiveEd Student-Parent Handbook, iSVA Supplemental Handbook, administrative directives as well as all state and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Guide students to meet CCMR indicators including TSIA2, SAT, ACT, AP, OnRamps, Dual Credit, College Prep Courses, and Industry-Based Certifications.
  • Track CCMR student outcomes, interpret accountability data, and support targeted interventions for students at risk of not meeting CCMR measures.
  • Collaborate with District Testing staff to coordinate virtual student participation in SAT/ACT School Day, PSAT, TSIA2, and AP testing.
  • Host virtual college and career readiness sessions for students and parents on topics such as endorsements, FAFSA/TASFA, scholarships, and career planning.
  • Provide direct advising for students on selecting postsecondary pathways aligned with their interests and Texas workforce needs.
  • Coordinate virtual college fairs, military recruiter sessions, and career exploration opportunities.
  • Support remedial/college prep opportunities for students not meeting readiness benchmarks.
  • Provide ongoing support to graduates as they transition into higher education, military, or workforce programs.
  • Maintain alumni engagement through virtual check-ins, resources, and persistence initiatives.
  • Work with campus directors, counselors, and district CCMR leadership to align practices with state requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of TEA CCMR rules, HB 5 requirements, and legislative updates impacting accountability
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of ResponsiveEd’s college and career readiness systems for virtual students.
  • Develop plans to offer in person college readiness exams to enrolled students at iSVA.
  • Some travel required for testing, leadership meetings and any other in-person requested meetings.
  • All other duties as assigned.
