Crisis Clinician

Position Summary

The Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) Crisis Clinician provides immediate, community-based behavioral health crisis intervention, assessment, stabilization, and care coordination for individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use crises. Services are delivered wherever the individual is located within the Iroquois County service area, including homes, schools, workplaces, healthcare settings, and other safe community locations—in accordance with Illinois Administrative Code Part 590, Rule 132, Medicaid requirements, CARF standards, and organizational policies.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary Mobile Crisis Response Team, the Crisis Clinician collaborates with Peer Support Specialists (CRSS/PRSS), first responders, healthcare providers, schools, community organizations, and natural supports to promote safety, reduce unnecessary emergency department utilization and hospitalization, and connect individuals with ongoing behavioral health services. The Crisis Clinician delivers compassionate, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented care while supporting individuals and families during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Qualifications

Education

Must meet Illinois Administrative Code requirements as a Mental Health Professional (MHP).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing crisis intervention or emergency behavioral health services.
• Experience in community mental health, crisis stabilization, emergency departments, inpatient behavioral health, or mobile crisis services.
• Training or experience in suicide risk assessment, de-escalation, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and substance use interventions.

Licensure

Professional licensure (LSW, LCSW, LPC, LCPC, or other behavioral health license) is welcomed but is not required provided the individual meets Illinois MHP requirements.

Additional Requirements

• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to travel throughout the Iroquois County service area.
• Successful completion of all required background checks.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and on-call schedules as required.

Essential Responsibilities

Mobile Crisis Assessment and Intervention

• Respond rapidly to behavioral health crises in community settings in accordance with established response time standards.
• Conduct comprehensive behavioral health assessments, including evaluation of presenting concerns, mental status, strengths, risk factors, protective factors, and immediate service needs.
• Complete suicide, self-harm, homicide, violence, and other safety risk assessments using evidence-based clinical practices.
• Administer Naloxone when warranted.
• Provide crisis counseling, de-escalation, stabilization, and brief therapeutic interventions.
• Develop collaborative safety plans with individuals and their identified supports.
• Determine the least restrictive and most clinically appropriate level of care.
• Coordinate voluntary or involuntary hospitalization when clinically indicated and consistent with Illinois law.

Care Coordination and Service Linkage

• Coordinate care with emergency departments, law enforcement, EMS, schools, primary care providers, behavioral health providers, and other community partners.
• Facilitate warm handoffs to outpatient treatment, crisis stabilization services, inpatient care, substance use treatment, peer support, and other community resources.
• Participate in post-crisis follow-up activities to support engagement and continuity of care.
• Advocate for individuals and families to reduce barriers to accessing services and supports.

Team Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with the Mobile Crisis Response Team Peer Support Specialist to provide person-centered, recovery-oriented crisis services.
• Participate in interdisciplinary case consultation, shift handoffs, team meetings, and clinical supervision.
• Support a positive team culture built on collaboration, accountability, respect, and continuous learning.
• Participate in debriefings following complex or high-risk crisis responses.

Documentation and Compliance

• Complete all clinical documentation accurately and within required timeframes.
• Data collection for performance measures.
• Ensure documentation supports medical necessity, clinical decision-making, and continuity of care.
• Maintain compliance with Illinois Administrative Code Part 590, Rule 132, Medicaid requirements, CARF standards, HIPAA, and organizational policies.
• Participate in program audits, quality improvement initiatives, and accreditation activities.

Professional Development

• Maintain required competencies and complete all mandatory training.
• Demonstrate proficiency in crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented practice, cultural responsiveness, and person-centered planning.
• Maintain professional boundaries and uphold ethical standards at all times.
• Participate in ongoing professional development to strengthen crisis response skills and clinical knowledge.

Pay Range: $60,000 - $65,000 annually

Working Conditions

This position combines office, community, and field-based work with an office in Watseka. Employees routinely provide services in homes, schools, healthcare facilities, community settings, and other locations throughout the Iroquois County service area. Work includes exposure to unpredictable environments and individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. Evening, weekend, holiday, and on-call responsibilities are required. Vehicle provided by IMHC.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to travel independently throughout the Iroquois County service area and perform the physical demands of the position, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 25 pounds. Requires effective verbal and written communication skills, the ability to exercise sound clinical judgment, remain calm under pressure, and manage multiple priorities in fast-paced and high-stress situations. Must successfully complete all required background checks, maintain required credentials, and comply with IMHC’s drug-free workplace and personnel policies.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
