JOB GOAL

The Elementary Principal implements District programs and leads the planning, implementation, and evaluation of instructional and operational initiatives to improve learning for all students. The Principal's work is focused on educational excellence, equity, student achievement, and the overall quality of programs for all learners in grades UPK-3.

Performance Responsibilities

Curriculum Development, Supervision, and Evaluation

  • Demonstrates knowledge of District and school curriculum and ensures implementation of the written curriculum.
  • Supports staff in effective use of curriculum resources.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of the Science of Reading and structured literacy practices and supports implementation across classrooms.
  • Leads and participates in curriculum development aligned with school and District goals.
  • Encourages and provides opportunities for staff to increase instructional expertise.
  • Utilizes appropriate school and community personnel in curriculum evaluation.
  • Identifies curricular and extracurricular needs through analysis of student achievement data and program effectiveness.
  • Uses student assessment results to identify instructional needs and implement program improvements.

Student Assessment and Monitoring

  • Emphasizes student achievement as the primary outcome of schooling.
  • Systematically assesses and monitors student progress using objective and verifiable data when possible.
  • Communicates meaningful and timely information to parents and stakeholders regarding student progress.
  • Collaborates with staff to identify and support at-risk students.
  • Makes referrals to appropriate support services and community agencies as needed.

Student and Staff Relations

  • Models effective interpersonal and human relations skills.
  • Promotes the development of positive human relations among staff.
  • Seeks input from staff and community members to assess and improve school climate.
  • Recognizes and rewards student and staff efforts and accomplishments.
  • Promotes positive well-being of students and staff.
  • Fosters collegial and collaborative relationships.
  • Communicates high expectations for both staff and students and provides appropriate motivation.

Establishing an Effective Workplace

  • Maintains a visible and active presence throughout the school.
  • Builds and sustains positive staff morale.
  • Implements a fair and consistent discipline system that supports student learning.
  • Develops and articulates a clear school vision and philosophy.
  • Establishes and monitors annual school-wide goals and objectives.
  • Protects instructional time by minimizing interruptions to the instructional process and teacher paperwork.
  • Works to reduce student absenteeism.
  • Promotes shared decision-making while maintaining appropriate structure and accountability.
  • Coordinates student and staff schedules to support instructional priorities.
  • Ensures appropriate supervision and high standards of behavior at all school-sponsored activities.
  • Ensures staff are informed about school programs, procedures, and available resources.

Professional Development

  • Identifies, plans, and implements professional learning aligned with assessed needs.
  • Develops and supports individualized instructional improvement plans when needed.
  • Effectively utilizes the expertise of school and District personnel for professional learning.
  • Supports staff in developing professional and instructional goals.
  • Provides opportunities for staff to share effective practices.
  • Provides space, time, consultants, and other assistance for teachers to develop new or specific instructional materials.

Personnel Development

  • Assists in the hiring and selection of staff assigned to the building.
  • Implements a clear and systematic personnel evaluation process.
  • Continuously monitors and refines evaluation practices.
  • Completes thorough, evidence-based, and insightful evaluation reports.
  • Makes personnel assignments based on qualifications, performance, and school needs.
  • Addresses performance concerns and recommends appropriate personnel actions when necessary.

Communications

  • Is accessible and responsive to staff, students, and families.
  • Encourages open and respectful communication.
  • Communicates clearly in writing and verbally in alignment with District policies and administrative decisions.
  • Effectively communicates with students individually, in groups, and during assemblies.
  • Keeps the Superintendent and central office administrators informed of school operations and concerns.
  • Collaborates with District leaders and other principals to share resources and best practices.

Decision Making and Problem Solving

  • Uses research, data, and stakeholder input to inform decisions.
  • Makes timely decisions and follows up to ensure effectiveness.
  • Clearly communicates decisions and their rationale.
  • Seeks consensus when appropriate.
  • Anticipates and addresses problems proactively.
  • Effectively delegates decision making and problem solving to appropriate personnel.

Building Management and Safety

  • Establishes and enforces procedures to ensure student and staff safety.
  • Maintains an orderly, welcoming, and aesthetically pleasing learning environment.
  • Oversees building maintenance, equipment, and grounds.
  • Ensures timely repair of facilities and equipment.
  • Responds effectively to emergencies and crisis situations.

Record Keeping and Financial Management

  • Maintains accurate student, personnel, and fiscal records.
  • Prepares and manages the building budget responsibly.
  • Completes required reports accurately and efficiently.
  • Manages routine administrative operations.
  • Plans for future facility and equipment needs.

OTHER DUTIES

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

REPORTS TO: The Superintendent of Schools

SUPERVISES: Directly supervises all staff assigned to the Principal's building.

The Principal also supervises the students and any volunteers assigned to the building.
