Position Overview:

 

The Shop Assistant will be responsible for performing manual labor tasks, assisting operations and other team members as well as performing various tasks while maintaining order, stocking equipment and materials, operating equipment, cleaning and organizing the shop, assisting with repairs, and moving materials. 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Shop Maintenance and Organization: Clean and maintain an organized shop area and workspaces to ensure proper storage of tools, materials, and equipment
  • Material Handling:  Move equipment, materials, parts, and tools around the shop floor
  • Inventory Control:  Assist with monitoring and replenishing stocks of materials for job packages ensuring proper inventory management
  • Support to Personnel: Provide support to operations and other team members with various tasks including minor repairs, equipment assembly, quality checks, picking up vehicles and running various errands as needed.  Assist technicians, provide tools and ensure they have what they need to complete job tasks
  • Communication:  Serve as a liaison effectively communicating with technicians, operations management and other personnel 
  • Safety and Compliance:  Maintain a safe working environment by wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to safety protocols
  • Basic Repairs and Maintenance:  Perform routine maintenance tasks on equipment and machinery, identify address and troubleshoot potential or minor issues with equipment
  • Tool Operation: Using hand tools and power tools safety and effectively
  • Training and Development:  Continuous learning and on-the-job training for personal and professional growth and development (i.e. 40 Hour Radiation Safety Training, etc.)
  • Assisting with NDT Procedures:  Set up and calibrate NDT equipment and perform tests under the guidance of technicians, and recording inspection results
  • Documenting and Reporting:  Assist with compiling reports and communicate findings by accurately recording inspection results for NDT inspections performed at the shop and following procedures
  • Maintaining NDT Equipment:  Assist operations personnel to ensure NDT equipment is in good working order and managing NDT materials
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by management and or job scope requirements

 

 

Required Skills and Experience:

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age 
  • Previous experience working in an industrial shop setting is preferred
  • Understanding of NDT methods and procedures (MT/PT/UTT/RT) will be strongly considered
  • 40 hr Radiation Safety Training considered an asset
  • Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail and adhere to safety standards
  • Good listening, verbal and written communication skills and ability to follow standard operating procedures and instructions including equipment operation
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and understanding of shop equipment and processes considered an asset
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations identify, address and troubleshoot minor issues
  • Valid Driver’s License and pre-access drug and alcohol testing required
  • Pre-employment background checks will be required
  • Must have a clean driving record (MVR)


Work Conditions: 


  • Position is based on site or out of a branch office
  • Field duties require indoor and outdoor work in diverse industrial environments with varying climate conditions 
  • Interaction with other crew employees, as well as supervisors, client personnel and a wide range of stakeholders 
  • Working in a plant and/or shop area around production machinery with extreme noise levels  
  • Work from various levels of heights and/or confined spaces for long periods of time 
  • Wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection (PPE) 


Physical and Mental Requirements: 


  • Ability to lift, move, and carry objects weighing 75lbs. or greater 
  • Must be able to walk, sit, stand, bend, reach, and climb 
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights, including climbing tanks, ladders, scaffolding, towers, piping systems, catwalks, structural steel, and wind turbines 
  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking and stooping 
  • Working extended hours and standing for extended periods of time 
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments in conditions of extreme heat and/or cold 
  • Work in and near industrial hazards 
  • Must be able to walk and climb except when performing non-field duties 
  • Remain consistently active throughout shift 
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing and other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively 
  • Sufficient vision (close vision and distance vision) or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to investigate 
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform routine in-field or office duties 
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform routine in-field or office duties and travel to off-site locations  
  • Must be able to wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection (PPE) 
  • Ability to maintain focus and multitask effectively 
  • Exhibit sensible and responsible behavior 
  • Ability to work autonomously or within a team environment
