Schedule Hours: 7am start time
Employment Type: Non-Exempt/Hourly - Part Time
Wage Range: $18.00 - $24.00 - NO CDL
$22.00 - $27.00 - W/CDL
Position Summary
The PRN Sanitation Driver provides on-call support for residential, commercial, and tribal solid waste collection services.
This position will provide support during holidays and fill in for vacation, sick days and call ins.
This position operates sanitation vehicles and equipment safely while assisting with scheduled routes, employee coverage, special projects, and community cleanup efforts as needed. The PRN Sanitation Driver helps ensure reliable sanitation services by maintaining safety, environmental compliance, and exceptional service to the community while upholding the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska's values of sovereignty, stewardship, accountability, and community service.
Key Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
- Complete assigned routes efficiently while meeting productivity and service standards.
- Assist with special collections, community cleanup events, recycling programs, or other sanitation-related duties as assigned.
- Support departmental operations by performing additional duties consistent with the position and the needs of the Tribe.
Vehicle Operation & Safety
- Operate sanitation trucks and related equipment safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all federal, state, tribal, and departmental regulations.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, including checking tires, fluid levels, lights, brakes, hydraulic systems, and other mechanical components.
- Identify and report maintenance needs, unusual wear, or mechanical concerns promptly.
- Maintain sanitation vehicles in a clean and safe operating condition, including routine cleaning of the truck cab and exterior.
Waste Collection & Disposal
- Collect residential, commercial, and tribal solid waste according to established routes and schedules.
- Operate automated collection equipment to safely lift and empty dumpsters, carts, and refuse containers.
- Perform manual collection of waste when automated equipment cannot be used.
- Transport collected waste to approved disposal facilities while complying with all environmental regulations and safety requirements.
- Follow proper procedures for identifying, handling, and reporting prohibited or hazardous materials.
Customer & Community Service
- Provide courteous, professional service while interacting with tribal members, residents, businesses, and visitors.
- Respond respectfully to customer concerns and report service issues to supervisors as appropriate.
- Promote a clean, safe, and healthy community by ensuring waste is collected efficiently and service areas are left orderly.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA, DOT, tribal, and departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and practice safe lifting and ergonomic techniques.
- Report accidents, injuries, equipment damage, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Maintain required CDL qualifications and comply with all applicable driving regulations.

Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a satisfactory driving record.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Ability to work safely in all weather conditions and varying outdoor environments.
- Knowledge of proper lifting techniques and safe material handling practices.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and accountability.
- Experience handling solid waste and familiarity with proper waste disposal procedures; experience with hazardous materials handling is preferred.
- Demonstrated punctuality, reliability, and strong attendance record.
- Ability to pass applicable background screening, drug testing, and any licensing or certification requirements established by the Tribe.
Software & Tools
- Working knowledge of GPS navigation systems and online mapping applications.
Work Environment
- Work safely around moving vehicles, mechanical equipment, compactors, and hydraulic systems.
- Tolerate prolonged exposure to outdoor environments, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, humidity, dust, noise, odors, and other environmental conditions.
- Wear and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including high-visibility clothing, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
- Respond quickly to changing traffic conditions, equipment issues, and other workplace hazards while maintaining situational awareness.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand and walk throughout the workday.
- Frequently climb in and out of sanitation vehicles using steps and handholds.
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, and reach while collecting and handling waste containers.
- Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull trash bags, carts, containers, and other materials weighing up to 75 pounds; occasionally move heavier items using proper lifting techniques or mechanical assistance.
- Frequently grasp, grip, and manipulate steering controls, hydraulic controls, and hand tools.
- Frequently perform repetitive hand, wrist, arm, shoulder, and back movements while operating equipment and collecting refuse.
- Sit for extended periods while operating commercial vehicles.
- Maintain sufficient vision, hearing, depth perception, manual dexterity, and peripheral awareness to safely operate commercial vehicles and sanitation equipment.
