Job Title: Kennel Assistant

Job Description:
As a Kennel Assistant at the Iowa County Humane Society, you play a key role in supporting the daily health and well-being of the animals in our care, under the direction of the Kennel Manager. This is a team-based position requiring compassion, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic to ensure all animals receive the medical care, nutrition, and enrichment they need.
Key Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
- Monitor and document animal health, behavior, and welfare daily; some animals may require more frequent checks.
- Maintain accurate records of animal care and treatments in PetPoint.
- Administer medications and vaccinations as directed by the Kennel Manager.
- Assist with grooming and appearance of animals, including brushing, bathing, and shaving.
- Handle animals safely and compassionately during procedures and daily interactions.
- Provide individualized care including walking, training, and enrichment activities as instructed.
- Assist with adoption meet-and-greets and provide accurate information on animal behavior and medical history.
- Support kennel attendants in their daily duties as needed.
- Assist in training volunteers and new staff as directed.
- Intake animals following the established intake Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Transport animals to veterinary appointments, spay/neuter clinics, or trap-neuter-return (TNR) sites as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Schedule:
- Weekdays 8:30am - 5:30pm
- Saturday and Sunday: 8:30am - 4:30pm
2-3 weekends per month. 1-2 weekdays alternating with the weekend shifts.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
- Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Able to safely handle animals of all sizes, including those that may be fearful, anxious, or reactive.
