QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fluency in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, French, Arabic, Swahili, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Lingala, Kinyarwanda, as well as other languages and dialects
- Ability to translate spoken communication to sign language for hearing-impaired audiences
- Ability to communicate with parents/guardians in a supportive and positive manner
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with the building administrator and classroom teachers
- Maintain and protect the confidentiality of student’s academic and social performance
REQUIREMENTS:
- Qualified candidates must successfully complete and pass a language proficiency test in the language(s) they are fluent to be considered for hire
- This position requires you to be in person. Remote interpretation may be used at select times at the discretion of the building administrator or parents/guardians.
REPORTS TO: Learning Supports Department/Language Services Senior Specialist
JOB GOALS:
The Iowa City Community School District is seeking multilingual staff to interpret during conferences, individual education plans (IEPs), and other school events and parent/guardian meetings. District interpreters are responsible for listening to, understanding, and interpreting spoken or written statements from one language to another. Reproduce statements in another language for the unique listening or reading audience in order to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate effective communication between two parties that do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken or written language to another
- Attend conferences and meetings and act as an official interpreter to mediate a discussion
- Relay concepts and ideas between languages
- Other duties as assigned
TERMS OF ASSIGNMENT:
Non-contract position. Interpreter positions are part-time employees who work as needed. There is no guarantee of hours. Work on an as-needed basis in various assignments/buildings throughout the district.
