Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school environment that supports student learning and staff effectiveness. This position ensures that school facilities are properly cleaned, maintained, and secured in accordance with Macon County Schools policies and established health and safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain assigned areas of the school building, including classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, and common areas
- Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting surfaces
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, replenish supplies, and ensure proper hygiene standards
- Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly
- Maintain floors through buffing, waxing, and other floor care procedures
- Assist with minor maintenance tasks, including replacing light bulbs and reporting repair needs
- Set up and break down spaces for school events, meetings, and activities
- Assist with moving furniture and equipment as needed
- Monitor building security by locking/unlocking doors and securing the facility as assigned
- Report safety hazards, damages, or needed repairs to supervisors promptly
- Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisors when restocking is needed
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment in a safe and effective manner
- Assist with seasonal duties such as snow/ice removal, weather-related cleanup, and outdoor maintenance (as applicable)
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Maintain a safe working environment and follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals
- Follow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectations
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail
- Maintain positive working relationships with staff and students
- Perform other duties as assigned by school administration or facilities management
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
- Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and follow safety procedures
- Basic understanding of building maintenance and repair needs
- Ability to follow directions and complete tasks independently

Physical Requirements
- Medium to heavy work classification
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds or more as needed
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment and machinery
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
Evaluation
- Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Macon County Schools evaluation procedures
Terms of Employment
- Full-time or part-time position (may include evening or second shift)
- Salary based on Macon County Schools salary schedule
- Work calendar determined by the district

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous custodial or maintenance experience preferred
