Job Title: Paraprofessional

Wage: Starting at $14 per hour, dependent upon experience

SUMMARY:

The Paraprofessional will lend professional support to the Teacher in all aspects of daily school activities which may include delivering the district adopted curriculum, testing students, model reading strategies, and perform any duties necessary to ensure the delivery of best-practice in remedial instruction within Title I guidelines to students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Meet minimum expectations of Title I qualified paraprofessional guidelines:

  • Complete at least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or
  • Obtain an associate’s degree (or higher); or
  • Meet a rigorous standard of quality demonstrated through passage of an approved formal state academic assessment

Strong preference given to a person who possesses a valid Michigan Teacher Certificate or Bachelor’s degree

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and monitor students during instructional breaks, throughout the school day and during outdoor recess.
  • Assist small groups and individual students in reinforcing skills in core curriculum areas initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Deliver appropriate diagnostic instruction to identified Title I/At-Risk students.
  • Coordinate the district adopted curriculum into the Title I program and services.
  • Lend professional support to teachers by suggesting strategies, materials, etc. which would be appropriate for students.
  • Lend professional support to teachers by taking a flexible group of students for short-term instruction.
  • Assist in the assessment of all students three times per year for placement, instruction and progress monitoring.
  • Attend student meetings for potential and existing students.
  • Participate in school meetings, events, and district provided professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned by the School Board, Teacher or Other ISD Administration and/or designee as allowable under grant guidance.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is essential to perform job duties and responsibilities.
  • The employee is responsible for maintaining all licenses, certificates, etc., and submitting to the ISD Business Office prior to the expiration date of said document(s).

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, peers, parents, and the community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk and hear and sometimes walk and sit. Ability to perform or assist with physically restraining a student when necessary. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs, such as boxes, books or supplies. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.

TRAVEL:

The employee may be expected to travel to professional development conferences/trainings, and to other events as approved by the building administrator.
