The Iona University Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) is seeking motivated and engaging medical students to serve as instructors for our 2026 Medical Summer Camp. This 3-week STEM enrichment program introduces middle and high school students to medicine, public health, biology, environmental health, and scientific research through interactive, hands-on learning experiences.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Iona STEP Medical Summer Camp is designed to expose students in grades 7–12 to:
• Human anatomy and physiology
• Cell biology and genetics
• Public health and epidemiology
• Microbiology and infectious diseases
• Environmental health and sustainability
• Neuroscience and psychology
• Scientific research and presentation skills
The camp emphasizes:
• Hands-on STEM learning
• Exposure to healthcare and medical careers
• Scientific inquiry and research
• Team collaboration and communication
• Student-led projects and presentations
PROGRAM DETAILS
Dates: July 6 – July 24, 2026
Schedule: Monday–Friday | 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
(Some days may extend until 5:00 PM for trips)
Final Day: July 24, 2026 | 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM
(Closing Ceremony & Student Research Presentations)
Location: Iona University Campus — New Rochelle, NY
Participants: Approximately 35–50 students (Grades 7–12)
Instructor Stipend: $3,000
Lunch Provided Daily
INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructors will:
• Facilitate engaging STEM and medical-related lessons
• Lead interactive classroom discussions and hands-on activities
• Mentor student groups throughout the research/project process
• Support student presentation and communication skill development
• Maintain a professional, inclusive, and encouraging learning environment
• Collaborate with fellow instructors and STEP staff
• Assist with supervision during campus activities and field trips
Instructors are encouraged to bring creativity and energy to lesson delivery while ensuring material remains age-appropriate and engaging for students in grades 7–12.
WEEKLY CURRICULUM THEMES
Week 1: Foundations of Medicine & Human Biology
Topics include:
• Human anatomy and organ systems
• Cell biology and genetics
• Medical terminology
• Healthcare careers
• Medical ethics and professionalism
Sample activities:
• Anatomy simulations
• Interactive biology demonstrations
• Career exploration activities
• Team-building exercises
Week 2: Public Health, Microbiology & Environmental Health
Topics include:
• Infectious diseases and microbiology
• Immunology and vaccines
• Public health and epidemiology
• Environmental health and sustainability
• Neuroscience and psychology
Sample activities:
• Outbreak simulations
• Environmental health investigations
• Public health case studies
• Collaborative STEM challenges
Week 3: Research Projects & Presentation Preparation
Students will:
• Develop collaborative STEM research projects
• Conduct guided research and data collection
• Create posters and visual presentations
• Practice public speaking skills
• Present final projects during the closing ceremony
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must:
• Be a current 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year medical student
• Have a strong foundation in biology, anatomy & physiology, and medical terminology
• Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Be enthusiastic about mentoring and working with middle/high school students
