The Forensic Underwriter plays a critical role in protecting Verus against loan fraud, data misrepresentation, and underwriting deficiencies. This position is not part of loan production but functions as a research and investigative resource—reviewing closed loans to identify fraudulent activity, material underwriting defects, and patterns of elevated risk. The ideal candidate combines strong forensic analytical skills with deep mortgage credit and documentation knowledge. This role partners closely with the Credit Risk, Compliance, and Capital Markets teams to support loan buyback mitigation, quality control, and investor confidence.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Conduct detailed forensic reviews of closed loans to identify potential fraud, misrepresentation, or material underwriting deficiencies.- Evaluate borrower and property documentation (income, assets, occupancy, appraisal, credit, title) for inconsistencies or signs of falsification.
- Reconstruct loan decisions and re-underwrite files as needed to verify adherence to Verus and investor guidelines.
- Collaborate with QC, Credit, and Servicing teams to investigate performance anomalies or early payment defaults.
- Support post-acquisition reviews for investor repurchase demands, rebuttals, and audit defense.
- Identify patterns of fraud or recurring issues and provide feedback to improve front-end underwriting and seller approval processes.
- Maintain detailed audit trails and prepare written findings and reports for senior management and external counterparties.
- Participate in fraud trend monitoring and contribute to development of forensic review tools and fraud risk indicators.
- Synthesize findings into clear, structured summaries and present conclusions with supporting evidence. Communicate results effectively—both in writing and verbally—and defend conclusions when challenged.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum 5–7 years of mortgage underwriting, loan quality control, or forensic review experience required.
- Deep knowledge of mortgage documentation, AUS systems, and fraud detection tools (e.g., FraudGuard, LoanSafe, CoreLogic, etc.).
- Experience in post-closing or repurchase risk analysis preferred.
- Prior work in non-agency / non-QM underwriting highly desirable.
- Strong analytical, investigative, and written communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or related field preferred.
