Role – Senior Underwriter (Life Insurance)
General Description: The Senior Underwriter will play a critical role in supporting Investors Preferred’s Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI) operations. This individual will be responsible for evaluating, assessing, and underwriting complex life insurance cases while ensuring compliance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory guidelines. The role requires sound judgment, technical underwriting expertise, and the ability to collaborate effectively with producers, distribution partners, reinsurers, and internal teams. The Senior Underwriter will serve as a subject matter expert on medical, financial, and technical underwriting considerations for PPLI, helping drive case approvals that balance business objectives with risk management. The position reports to the Chief of Staff.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and underwrite Private Placement Life Insurance applications
- Analyze medical, financial, and legal documents to determine insurability and recommend appropriate action.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for underwriting-related inquiries from producers, TPAs, and distribution partners.
- Collaborate with internal teams (New Business, Policy Administration, Compliance, and Legal) to ensure timely and accurate case handling.
- Provide clear communication on underwriting decisions, requirements, and risk assessments to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Maintain strong working relationships with reinsurers, medical directors, and external underwriting resources.
- Monitor and interpret industry trends, guidelines, and best practices to inform underwriting strategy.
- Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance service levels, case turnaround times, and risk management.
- Additional duties as assigned by supervisor
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; relevant work experience considered in lieu of degree.
- 7 years of progressive life insurance underwriting experience, with strong exposure to large life insurance structures or jumbo underwriting.
- In-depth knowledge of medical, financial, and lifestyle underwriting principles.
- Experience working with distribution partners, TPAs, and reinsurers.
- Completion of LOMA, ALU, CLU, FALU, FLMI, CLU, or ChFC coursework required
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex underwriting decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Self-motivated with a strong desire for continuous learning and professional development.
