Position Overview
Intuitive Safety Solutions (ISS) is seeking a Senior Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to provide onsite support at a manufacturing facility in Modesto, California.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced EHS professional with a strong environmental compliance background who enjoys working directly with manufacturing operations and leadership to identify risk, improve compliance, and drive measurable results.
The primary focus of this role is environmental compliance, including wastewater management, pH control, environmental permitting, hazardous waste management, and regulatory compliance, while also supporting the site's broader occupational safety and health programs.
The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to facility leadership, partnering closely with Operations, Engineering, Human Resources, and Production to maintain an audit-ready operation and foster a culture where environmental stewardship and employee safety are core business values.
This is an initial three-month full-time consulting assignment with the potential to transition into a long-term or permanent position based on business needs and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Leadership
- Lead environmental compliance efforts in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Support wastewater treatment operations, including pH monitoring, compliance, and corrective actions.
- Manage environmental programs, including hazardous waste, stormwater (SWPPP), Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC), hazardous materials, and environmental reporting.
- Conduct environmental risk assessments and identify opportunities to improve environmental performance.
- Maintain environmental permits, records, and compliance documentation.
- Coordinate environmental inspections, audits, and corrective actions to ensure the facility remains audit-ready.
- Develop and update environmental procedures, policies, and standard operating procedures.
- Deliver environmental compliance training to employees and supervisors.
- Partner with facility leadership to proactively identify environmental risks and implement sustainable solutions.
Safety & Health Responsibilities
- Conduct routine safety inspections, audits, risk assessments, and workplace observations.
- Partner with supervisors and operations leadership to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, injuries, and environmental events to determine root causes and preventive measures.
- Support OSHA compliance and occupational health and safety initiatives.
- Assist with workers' compensation case management and return-to-work activities as needed.
- Develop and deliver EHS training programs.
- Promote employee engagement and continuous improvement through visible leadership on the manufacturing floor.
- Support implementation and continuous improvement of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Engineering, Quality, Human Resources, Maintenance, and Production.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3 years of Environmental, Health & Safety experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong environmental compliance experience, including wastewater, hazardous waste, stormwater, and environmental permitting.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and applicable California environmental regulations.
- Experience conducting environmental and safety risk assessments.
- Strong knowledge of incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to build strong relationships with employees and leaders at every level of the organization.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Food or beverage manufacturing experience.
- Experience supporting wastewater treatment operations.
- Knowledge of pH monitoring and wastewater compliance programs.
- Experience supporting ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
- ASP, CSP, CHMM, CIH, or other EHS-related professional certifications.
- Experience managing environmental audits and regulatory inspections.
