To advance the purpose of InterVarsity Press, this position will assist editors in administrative tasks, project management, developmental editing, and author relations to produce high quality books.


Status: Full-Time

Location: Lisle, IL (hybrid work agreement by arrangement)

Pay: $46,000-48,000 annually


The IVP trade team is looking for an editor to help with project management and to work with authors on later stages of manuscript development. Manuscript reading and reviewing revisions for projects in the areas of spiritual formation and a wide range of general interest topics will be a part of the role. The assistant production editor will be supporting the Vice President of Editorial and the Editorial Director for the trade team. There will be some administrative work such as meeting scheduling and developing the publishing meeting agendas. As new media projects emerge, the person in this role will help with creating processes and support for the projects. The growth path for this role would be toward doing more manuscript development, and there’s longer term potential to move into manuscript acquisitions.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES


Personal:

Manage Editorial Projects by:

  • Working with the managing editors to execute and coordinate the book scheduling process.
  • Working with the director of editorial and other editorial managers to coordinate and execute special projects and process refinements.


Assist with Book Projects by:

  • Writing cover copy.
  • Creating cover concept sheets.
  • Providing names for reader reports.
  • Overseeing endorsement work with project editors or authors.
  • Working directly with authors in managing workflow in later stages of book projects.
  • Overseeing editorial processes for series, sets, or new editions of books as assigned.
  • Participating in title brainstorming meetings.
  • Reviewing and routing proposals received by the Publisher.
  • Requesting and reviewing author corrections at various phases.
  • Corresponding directly with authors regarding queries from copyediting, proofreading, and final checks.
  • Providing manuscript evaluations and reader reports.
  • Reviewing sample pages.


(potential) Manage Digital Media Projects by:

  • Collaborating with the project editor and working with authors to plan and script video content for selected books and Bible studies.
  • Coordinating IVP staff, vendors, and processes to ensure that media projects are delivered on time and within budget parameters.
  • Assisting with audio and video editing as needed
  • Assisting In creating newsletters and webinars.


Any other duties as required


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Affirmation of InterVarsity’s Statement of Faith
  • Background in Bible and theology (academic required; trade preferred)
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates a strong editorial aptitude
  • For an academic-focused role, proficiency in biblical languages is preferred
  • Proven project management experience preferred
  • Familiarity with the current edition of The Chicago Manual of Style preferred
  • Experience proofreading and copyediting preferred
  • Significant aptitude with Microsoft Word, including expertise in styles, templates and macros preferred
  • Familiarity with the publishing industry, particularly Christian book publishing, preferred
  • Audio/video editing experience a plus
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
  • Good judgment and ability to work independently
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills
  • Strong sense of responsibility for accuracy and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work in a diverse team environment
  • Prudence with confidential information
  • Flexibility to attend the Urbana Student Missions Conference every six years, Dec. 26-Jan.1, and National Staff Conference every three years (the year after Urbana), approximately Jan. 2-7                              


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS             

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience required as described in the section below (dependent on the level of the position posted). Relevant higher education will be taken into account and may reduce the experience required.

Assistant Production Editor – Level 6

The Assistant Production Editor will be responsible for all of the above and will have a year of experience in work related to editing and/or project management. A related graduate degree is preferred, especially for an academic-focused role. Developmental editing experience is preferred.


Associate Production Editor - Level 7

The Associate Production Editor will be responsible for all of the above and will have at least two years of experience in work related to editing and project management. A related graduate degree is preferred, especially for an academic-focused role. Developmental editing experience is required. The Associate Project Editor may grow project acquisition skills by acquiring a limited target number of book projects per year and doing the related work of providing revisions to authors, communicating about the book to other departments to facilitate marketing, and managing the flow of manuscripts for copyediting.


Production Editor - Level 8

The Production Editor will be responsible for all of the above and will have at least five years of experience in work related to editing and project management. A related graduate degree is preferred, especially for an academic-focused role. Developmental editing experience is required. The Production Editor may grow project acquisition skills by acquiring a limited target number of book projects per year and doing the related work of providing revisions to authors, communicating about the book to other departments to facilitate marketing, and managing the flow of manuscripts for copyediting. The Production Editor will be responsible for optimizing intra- and inter-departmental processes (analyzing and developing systems and procedures in coordination with editorial leaders). This role may be assigned more complicated projects with permissions and releases, as well as reference projects in an academic context.


Senior Production Editor - Level 9

The Senior Production Editor will be responsible for all of the above and will have at least ten years of experience in work related to editing and project management. A related graduate degree is preferred, especially for an academic-focused role. Developmental editing experience is required. The Senior Production Editor may grow project acquisition skills by acquiring a limited target number of book projects per year and doing the related work of providing revisions to authors, communicating about the book to other departments to facilitate marketing, and managing the flow of manuscripts for copyediting. The Senior Production Editor will be responsible for optimizing intra- and inter-departmental processes (analyzing and developing systems and procedures in coordination with editorial leaders). This role would be assigned the most complicated projects with permissions and releases, as well as reference projects in an academic context.
