Role Overview
The Academic & College Counselor is responsible for administering all aspects of the academic and college search process for a cohort of 6-12 grade students. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop rapport with students and parents.
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
Master’s degree in Counseling or related field.
A minimum of one year of guidance counseling and/or college counseling in a high school or postsecondary educational setting.
Demonstrated knowledge of the college admissions process, trends, and procedures.
Experience developing rapport with children and parents of various backgrounds.
Thorough understanding of financial aid, scholarships, and strategies to pay for college.
Responsibilities & Duties
Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admission process, trends, procedures, and testing.
Advising and supporting seniors and their parents as they navigate the college application process and helping students and parents aspire realistically and choose a “best-fit” college.
Meeting with students, individually and in groups, to discuss individual college plans and provide academic advice accordingly.
Managing the course selection process for students in accordance with graduation requirements.
Providing advice towards curricular and career choices as needed.
Maintaining student files with updated records for each student, including transcripts, report cards, recommendations, and college documents.
Writing an official school recommendation for each senior. Gathering information from parents, teachers, school records, and students themselves and completing all necessary school reports requested by colleges, including evaluations of students.
Providing updated information to students and parents concerning colleges, including college guides, scholarships, financial aid, and strategies for paying for college.
Keeping track of admission decisions and statistics for administration.
Serving as a liaison with college admissions offices throughout the year.
Making informational presentations to parents during evening parent programs.
Being aware of issues and trends in college admission, higher education, testing, as well as keeping up-to-date about specific colleges.
Maintaining active membership in professional organizations such as College Board, NACAC, and SACAC.
Maintaining and disseminating information about standardized tests such as SAT, ACT, and TOEFL, and helping to administer AP, PSAT, SAT-10, and WrAP exams.
Coordinating selection of student award recipients and presentation of awards.
Chaperoning college trips, assisting in the coordination of on-campus college visits, and attending various school activities as needed.
