Position Description
International Leadership Charter Middle School seeks energetic, dependable, and student-centered Recreational and Fitness Specialists to support the school's Physical Fitness and Athletics Partnerships. The Recreational and Fitness Specialists will provide structured athletic instruction, skill development, and recreational programming that promotes healthy lifestyles, academic success, discipline, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship among middle school students.
The goal of the school's Physical Fitness Program is to introduce students to a wide variety of boys' and girls' athletic activities that foster physical wellness while reinforcing academic growth, personal responsibility, positive character development, and collaborative team-building skills.
Position Duties and Essential Responsibilities
- Collaborate and facilitate engaging recreational and athletic activities for middle school students with the school’s physical fitness partners.
- Reinforce the fundamentals, rules, and sportsmanship of various boys' and girls' athletic programs in collaboration with the school’s athletic partnerships.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and positive environment that encourages participation from students of all skill levels.
- Reinforce school expectations regarding attendance, behavior, respect, accountability, and academic achievement.
- Supervise students during practices, recreational periods, competitions, and school-sponsored athletic events.
- Monitor student safety and enforce all school safety procedures and athletic guidelines.
- Maintain attendance records, equipment inventories, and activity logs as required.
- Communicate effectively with school administrators, teachers, families, and students regarding student participation and progress.
- Assist in organizing intramural leagues, tournaments, fitness challenges, and special athletic events.
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, fairness, and respect.
- Maintain constructive relationships with administration, peers, staff, parents and students.
- Maintain a professional appearance and deportment.
- Work autonomously within school established guidelines and policies. Respond appropriately to evaluate feedback and changes in the work setting.
- Adhere to the highest ethical standards, demonstrate empathetic disposition and good judgement. Dependability, integrity, and a strong commitment to the charter school’s vision.
- Supervise and accompany students to and from athletic activities from the school using public transportation.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Education, or a related field preferred.
- Experience working with middle school-aged youth in athletics, recreation, education, after-school, or community-based programs.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate athletic instruction and youth development practices.
- Strong classroom and group management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational abilities.
- Ability to motivate students with diverse backgrounds and athletic abilities.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
- Ability to successfully complete all required background checks and New York State clearance requirements.
Reporting Structure
The Part-Time Recreational and Fitness Specialist reports directly to the school’s Principal. This position pays $25/hour for a minimum of six hours per week while the program is in session, (4-6 weeks Fall and Spring semesters.
