Salary Range: $52,000 - $56,000

Organization Description:

The International Institute of Minnesota (IIMN) is a dynamic organization that provides services to maximize the talents and opportunities New Americans bring to our state. IIMN assists low-income New Americans in their transition to a new homeland by providing comprehensive services for successful integration. IIMN serves more than 4,000 New Americans annually with new arrival social services to employment placement and advancement through to U.S. Citizenship attainment. Programs are divided into four primary areas: Refugee Services, Education and Employment Training Services, and Immigration Services. IIMN also provides advocacy for policy reforms and supports systems change that improve opportunities for New Americans to move their lives forward.

Purpose:

The IMG Navigator works within Medical Career Advancement (MCA) as part of the Medical Careers Pathway at the International Institute of Minnesota. IMG offers academic and career guidance, wrap-around support, and financial assistance to immigrant international medical graduates (IMGs) as they pursue licensure and residency as physicians in the U.S. or in obtaining alternate medical careers. The IMG Navigator will manage a caseload of active IMG clients, working with clients 1:1 and facilitating small groups. The IMG Navigator approves applicants for financial assistance and facilitates disbursement of funding for exam fees, exam preparation programs, and for tuition in alternate medical careers. The IMG Navigator provides academic advising, career counseling, and navigation of higher education. The IMG Navigator provides guidance with residency applications, residency interview preparation, arranges for IMG mentoring with healthcare professionals, and provides employment services. The IMG Navigator is responsible for client management, outcome tracking, and data entry. The IMG Navigator shares responsibility for recruitment, outreach and relationship-building with education and employment partners, volunteer recruitment, and report writing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provide case management for Immigrant Medical Graduates preparing for licensure and residency as physicians or for alternate careers in the medical field

- Recruit clients and respond to program inquiries

- Counsel IIMN clients about medical career options, provide guidance about college and program selection, assist with financial planning, and give overall support for student success

- Connect individuals to Nursing Assistant Training, College Readiness Academy, Professional Leadership Training, Entrepreneurship, and other IIMN classes and services

- Review client applications, interview prospective clients, and award tuition assistance, reimbursements, and support services according to funding requirements

- Develop individual employment plans and track client data and progress on databases and spreadsheets, keeping client data current (Excel, D365, Workforce One)

- Give IMG presentations as needed

- Identify gaps in student knowledge and develop supportive measures

- Advocate for clients at institutions of higher learning and places of employment

- Provide residency application assistance and interview preparation to clients

- Recruit mentors from employer partners and connect mentors with IMG clients

- Connect clients to entry-level, mid-level, and higher-level positions in the medical field, refer clients to college nursing programs, physician’s assistant programs, and other medical career training programs

- Assist clients with employment-related tasks such as resume and cover letter writing, provide referrals to employer partners, and write letters of recommendation

- Track project outcomes and assist with quarterly and annual funding reports

- Partner with education and employment partners to enhance program and client success

- Attend IIM All Staff meetings, All Workfroce and Navigator meetings, MCA meetings, and meetings with funders at MDH

- This person may have recurring access to vulnerable populations

Requirements:

- Commitment to the International Institute of Minnesota mission and vision

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

- Proven oral and written communication skills, including negotiation and problem solving

- Experience working with New Americans and non-native speakers of English

- Knowledge of local community resources

- Excellent organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously

- Self-motivated person who can work independently and collaborate

- Experience or familiarity with one or more of the following:

o College academic advising

o Career counseling

o Higher education medical career training programs

o Immigrant International Medical Graduate support

Physical Demands:

- Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity

- Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands

- Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying
