What are the responsibilities and job description for the Diamond Grader / Gemologist position at International Gemological Institute?
Position Summary
Every IGI grading position begins with hands-on, one-on-one training in our laboratory policies and procedures. In this role, you will examine and grade diamonds submitted to IGI's New York laboratory for IGI grading reports, working with precision instruments and internationally accepted grading standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform initial examination of diamonds submitted to the New York laboratory, using a binocular microscope and tweezers
- Identify clarity characteristics and record them accurately on plot diagrams
- Assign polish, symmetry, and clarity grades in accordance with the internationally accepted diamond grading system
- Participate in D-to-Z color grading and fancy color diamond grading
- Follow established laboratory procedures and quality control standards to ensure grading accuracy and consistency
- Handle client property with care and maintain proper documentation throughout the grading process
- Work collaboratively within a diverse grading team, giving and receiving constructive feedback and mentoring
Qualifications
- Candidates from science, production, hospitality, and manufacturing backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform precise, repetitive work to a consistently high standard.
- Ability to distinguish fine visual differences in color and clarity characteristics.
- Ability to work effectively in a structured, fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Eligible to work in the United States.
Preferred, Not Required
- Gemological training or professional certification, such as a graduate diploma from IGI, GIA, FGA, or HRD Antwerp.
- Bachelor's degree, ideally in Earth Sciences or a related field.
- One year of experience in a fast-paced, structured work environment.
Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
