SENIOR CAREGIVER / DEMENTIA CARE SPECIALIST
Private Family | Western Pennsylvania, Youngstown area , 16148
Full-Time | Long-Term Position | $90,000–$140,000 DOE Full Benefits
Private Accommodation Available Nearby
We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and physically capable Senior Caregiver / Dementia Care Specialist to support an 81-year-old gentleman in his private residence in Western Pennsylvania, conveniently located between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
This is a wonderful long-term opportunity for an experienced caregiver who has direct hands-on experience supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, cognitive decline, and mobility limitations.
The gentleman is approximately 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. Historically, he has been an incredibly strong, driven, successful man with a wonderful presence and personality. Today, he continues to enjoy conversation, humor, and interaction. We are looking for somebody upbeat and engaging who can preserve his dignity and independence while providing the hands-on assistance he now requires.
THE POSITION
The primary responsibility will be the gentleman's daily personal care, safety, mobility, and overall well-being.
He has weakness on his left side, particularly his left leg, and requires considerable hands-on assistance with transfers, toileting, bathing, and daily activities. Candidates must be physically fit and strong enough to safely assist a tall, 200-pound gentleman.
Experience using a gait belt, sit-to-stand device, and Hoyer lift is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities will include assisting with bathing and showering, toileting and personal hygiene, dressing, mobility and transfers, catheter care, taking and documenting vitals, medication reminders/assistance as appropriate, and maintaining detailed daily care notes.
Cleanliness and sanitation are extremely important within this household. The family maintains an exceptionally clean, neat, odor-free home. The caregiver must be meticulous about personal hygiene, restroom sanitation, cleaning surfaces following personal care, and leaving everything exactly as it was found.
The ideal candidate will also be observant and able to recognize changes in mood, behavior, mobility, or general condition and communicate those changes clearly to the family and appropriate healthcare professionals.
The gentleman has AFib and a history that includes a possible TIA and recurring UTIs. An experienced caregiver who understands that behavioral or cognitive changes can sometimes indicate an underlying medical issue will be particularly valuable.
PERSONALITY & FAMILY FIT
Personality is equally important.
We are looking for somebody kind, jolly, positive, conversational, patient, and confident. The gentleman enjoys joking and interacting with people but also appreciates his personal space. He has historically responded particularly well to caregivers who are assertive enough to keep him moving and engaged, but who do so with kindness and without being overly bossy.
The caregiver should understand how to encourage and redirect somebody experiencing cognitive decline while always preserving their dignity.
The gentleman's wife is 82, active, independent, and extremely private. This individual is being hired specifically to support her husband and should be capable of quietly integrating into the household without disrupting her independence or privacy.
The family works with medical professionals and cognitive specialists and is exploring different approaches designed to keep the gentleman active, engaged, and functioning at the highest level possible. The caregiver should be open-minded, organized, and comfortable working collaboratively with family members and healthcare professionals.
CARE TEAM COORDINATION
There is already a care team in place. Ideally, we would like to find somebody capable of eventually helping coordinate and schedule the existing caregivers, while continuing to work under the family's direction.
This individual will also personally provide care and help fill gaps in coverage when needed, particularly on weekends.
This is not simply an administrative Care Manager position. The successful candidate must be willing and able to provide direct, hands-on personal care.
DRIVING & TRANSPORTATION
The family has a newer wheelchair-adapted minivan with an easy-to-operate manual ramp. A confident driver with a clean driving record and prior experience transporting individuals with mobility limitations would be advantageous.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are particularly interested in candidates with substantial direct experience caring for individuals with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, cognitive decline, and mobility challenges. CNA, LPN, or other relevant caregiving/medical certifications would certainly be welcomed.
Candidates should be physically fit and capable of assisting with transfers and personal care; comfortable with toileting, bathing, catheter care, sanitation, vitals, documentation, and mobility equipment; organized and observant; and able to communicate clearly with family members, caregivers, and medical professionals.
Most importantly, we are looking for a good person—somebody trustworthy, patient, upbeat, discreet, and genuinely interested in becoming a long-term part of this gentleman's care and support system.
There are cats on the property, primarily outdoors, so candidates should be comfortable around animals.
LOCATION & ACCOMMODATION
The family's primary residence is a large private country property in approximately one hour from a major city and conveniently situated between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
A private apartment approximately one mile from the residence may be available for the successful candidate. This provides an excellent balance between being close to the family while allowing everyone to maintain their own privacy.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Compensation is anticipated in the range of $90,000–$140,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, schedule, and the overall candidate.
The family offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k), dental, vision, and additional benefits.
There is no rush to simply fill this position. The family is focused on finding the right person with genuine long-term intentions.
We are looking for somebody kind, capable, physically strong, experienced, upbeat, and trustworthy—someone the gentleman will genuinely enjoy having around and, equally important, someone his wife will feel completely comfortable welcoming into their home.
Qualifications
Advanced medical training and direct experience supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other forms of cognitive decline are required. LPN, RN, or candidates with specialized Alzheimer’s/dementia care experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
Candidates must have prior experience working in private homes, outstanding verifiable references, and a clear command of English. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and be willing to complete a comprehensive criminal background check and drug screening.
