CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: Possesses the clinical competencies necessary to perform the essential tasks of a Registered Nurse (RN) in the outpatient surgical setting.
Preoperative and Pre-anesthesia Testing (PAT) Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough evaluations including review of medical history, current medications, and medical comorbidities; perform preoperative assessment of patient that aligns with the procedure/surgery and anesthesia-type scheduled; collects and interprets vital signs and point of care testing
- Educate patients about the procedure/surgery, anticipated anesthesia-type, and expectations for recovery; ensure compliance with pre-operative instructions, including knowledge of NPO and medication status pre- and post-surgery.
- Maintain accurate and complete records by ensuring all required documentation is completed and signed by physicians.
- Conduct phone interview and review of records for each patient scheduled; identify patients requiring anesthesia consultation in accordance with current guidelines.
- Responsible for preoperative procedures including IV insertion and assistance with regional nerve blocks; adheres to aseptic technique and infection control guidelines per policy.
Intraoperative (circulator/scrub nurse) Responsibilities:
- Assist in maintenance of the sterile field, including monitoring for contamination; monitors traffic/noise patterns in the OR, ensuring adherence to facility policy and procedure.
- Management of surgical instruments; ensuring the availability of surgical supplies, equipment, and medications for the indicated procedure/surgery.
- Adheres to all required components of Safe Surgical Checklist.
- Accurately documents all necessary components of the operative encounter, including implantable devices or tissues.
Postoperative & Recovery Responsibilities:
- Evaluate patient recovery from anesthesia; monitor for adverse reactions; management of acute postoperative pain.
- Provide instructions for discharge, including home care, medication changes, and follow-up appointments; ensuring a safe discharge plan is in place.
- Follow up with patients to assess recovery and address any post-operative concerns or questions; communicate any issues identified to the indicated provider.
Additional Clinical Responsibilities:
- : Administer and chart medications per physician order; perform medication calculations for accurate medication dosing.
- Responds to and provides treatment for urgent or acute patient situations during unanticipated events per policy and in alignment with BLS, ACLS, MHAUS and PALS guidelines and algorithms.
- Maintains patient safety throughout perioperative encounter; works in accordance with current employee safety guidelines
- Works respectfully and collaboratively with all team members; fosters an environment that promotes staff growth and development
- Monitors medical supplies and medication inventory levels; report to appropriate parties when restocking of supplies is necessary; participate in quarterly cleaning; ongoing monitoring of expiration dates
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and mentor new staff; proactively seeks to continuously improve patient care and operations
- Completes mandatory educational requirements and maintains required BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications; annual review of applicable policies
- Maintains strict confidentiality in alignment with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines and InterMed policies.
- Consistently adheres to applicable industry standard guidelines (i.e. AORN, CDC, APIC)
- Assumes responsibility for assigned role and seek/performs other job-related activities during downtime.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Education: ADN or BSN from an accredited institution
- Experience:
- Previous Ambulatory Surgery OR Pre- and Post Op, Circulator, and/or PACU experience preferred
- License/Certifications:
- Unencumbered active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Maine
- BLS required
- ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of hire
- Knowledge of anesthetic techniques (general, regional, local)
- Basic knowledge of all equipment used for patient care in a surgery setting.
- High level of critical thinking and assessment skills
- Experience in continuous quality improvement and/or Lean Six Sigma preferred
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and respond to rapidly changing, sometimes acute patient care needs

- Proficient in Windows and Microsoft applications, and electronic medical record (EMR) experience preferred
