The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for creating and maintaining the core automation services within ICE’s infrastructure. This role will be a combination of hands-on work and assisting in setting new standards via automated tooling. A successful candidate will understand the complete software development lifecycle and have a proven track record of building infrastructure and automation platforms, mentoring other engineers, and educating infrastructure staff. Additionally, the Lead Systems Engineer performs root cause analysis of problems, selects, develops, and implements automations tools and actively participates in deeply technical discussions.

Responsibilities 

• Develop automation scripts and tooling using Python, Shell, and Ansible to streamline operations and enforce security controls.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and maintain RESTful APIs
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for secure deployment of shared services.
• Possess strong knowledge of operating systems such as Windows and Linux
• Lead efforts to modernize shared services infrastructure with a focus on automation and observability.
• Mentor and coach junior developers to improve their skills and knowledge
• Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and architecture discussions
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident response in production operations in a 24/7 environment
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal documentation and knowledge sharing.

Knowledge and Experience

• Strong proficiency in Python and Shell scripting for automation.
• Experience with Ansible for configuration management and orchestration.
• Knowledge of SRE principles, including monitoring, alerting, and incident management.
• Solid understanding of TCP/IP, TLS, and secure communication protocols.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform a plus).
• 2 years of experience in ansible code development
• Proficient in API development, including RESTful APIs and microservices
• Experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes is added advantage

Preferred Knowledge and Experience 

• Experience in fintech, crypto, or other security-sensitive domains.
• Exposure to container platforms (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with GCP, AWS, or hybrid cloud environments.
• Understanding of threat modeling, secrets rotation, and zero trust architectures.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• Architect, deploy, and maintain HashiCorp Vault clusters for high availability and secure secrets management.
• Experience building a self-service HashiCorp Vault platform and cryptography platforms.

New York Base Salary Range 

The expected base salary for this role, if located in New York, is between $149,400 - 180,000 USD.  The base salary range does not include Intercontinental Exchange’s incentive compensation.  While we provide this range as general guidance, at ICE we compensate employees based on the skillset and experience of the individual. Regular full-time ICE employees are eligible for a suite of competitive employee benefits, including healthcare coverage (medical, dental and vision), a 401(k) plan, life insurance, time off, and paid leave for qualifying circumstances.
