We are seeking a highly capable, hands-on Controller/Accountant to take full ownership of all accounting and financial functions. This is a solo role with no direct support staff — you will personally handle day-to-day bookkeeping, manufacturing cost accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and provide strategic insights directly to the Owner/CEO. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced small manufacturing environment and is proficient in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Premium.
Position Summary
As the sole finance professional at Intelligent Tool Corporation, you will manage the complete accounting cycle while leveraging Business Central Premium’s integrated manufacturing capabilities (production orders, bills of materials, routings, capacity planning, and real-time costing). You will ensure accurate product costing, inventory valuation, financial integrity, and compliance in a precision machining environment, while delivering actionable insights to support profitability, operational efficiency, and continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
1. System Management & Configuration (Business Central Premium)
- Serve as the primary administrator and power user of Dynamics 365 Business Central Premium, working primarily from the Accountant Role Center.
- Configure and maintain the chart of accounts, posting groups, dimensions, BOMs, routings, work/machine centers, and cost categories tailored to precision machining operations.
- Manage system integrations, bank feeds, approval workflows, and data integrity; recommend and implement process improvements or extensions as needed.
2. Day-to-Day Financial Operations
- Record and post all financial transactions, including journal entries, sales orders, and purchase orders for materials and subcontracting.
- Manage full-cycle accounts payable (vendor invoices, purchase order matching, payments) and accounts receivable (invoicing, collections, credit management).
- Perform daily/weekly bank and credit card reconciliations using automated tools where possible.
3. Manufacturing Cost Accounting & Inventory
- Maintain item master data and track raw materials, work-in-progress (WIP), and finished goods inventory for precision-machined components.
- Perform physical inventory counts, reconcile perpetual records, and manage adjustments for scrap, obsolescence, or shrinkage.
- Implement and maintain standard costing; calculate actual costs from production orders and analyze material, labor, and overhead variances.
- Allocate manufacturing overhead accurately and support job/product costing for profitability analysis, quoting, and pricing decisions.
- Post and review production orders, material consumption, output, and capacity usage, ensuring seamless flow into the general ledger and financial statements.
4. Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow).
- Lead month-end and year-end closings, including accruals, depreciation, inventory/cost adjustments, and production order close-outs.
- Generate and analyze manufacturing-specific reports: cost of goods manufactured (COGM), COGS, gross margin by job/product, variance reports, and inventory turnover/aging.
- Provide clear financial insights and KPIs to the Owner/CEO using built-in analytics, Power BI integration, or Excel exports.
5. Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow
- Develop and monitor annual budgets, production plans, and capital expenditure forecasts for machining equipment and facility needs.
- Create rolling cash flow forecasts that account for material purchases, production cycles, and customer collections.
- Advise on liquidity management, major purchases, supplier negotiations, and production scaling decisions.
6. Payroll, Tax, & Compliance
- Process payroll, including direct labor hours that integrate with production costing.
- Handle payroll tax filings and related reporting.
- Prepare and file all federal, state, and local tax returns (income, sales/use, property, etc.), including estimated payments and manufacturing-related incentives (e.g., R&D credits, equipment deductions).
- Maintain strong internal controls, audit trails (leveraging Business Central’s full traceability), and documentation to support AS9100D, ITAR, and external audits or lender reviews.
7. Strategic Support & Advisory
- Partner directly with the Owner/CEO and production team to improve profitability, reduce costs in machining operations, optimize pricing, and support make-or-buy or capacity decisions.
- Participate in operational meetings with real-time ERP data on how production impacts financial performance.
- Support business planning, loan applications, or growth initiatives with financial models and projections.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred but not required).
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a manufacturing or precision machining environment (strong cost accounting, inventory valuation, and production costing experience essential).
- Strong hands-on proficiency with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Premium, particularly manufacturing, cost accounting, inventory, and financial modules. Experience configuring BOMs, routings, and production orders is highly desired.
- Solid understanding of GAAP, inventory costing methods (Standard, FIFO, Average), and manufacturing variances.
- Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with Power BI or financial analytics tools.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a solo role.
- Strong communication skills — able to translate complex financial and costing data into actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders (including the Owner/CEO).
- Self-starter who is comfortable owning the full scope of finance in a small, growing manufacturing business.
