Job Summary

The Tool & Die Maker II is responsible for the design, construction, repair, and troubleshooting of stamping dies used in production operations. This journeyman-level role works independently to determine die design solutions, machine components, assemble tooling, and conduct test runs to ensure proper function and quality. This position plays a critical role in minimizing downtime and supporting efficient press operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Review part prints, applications, and production requirements
  • Determine the most effective and workable die design
  • Select and acquire appropriate tool steels and materials
  • Machine die components using manual and precision equipment
  • Assemble, fit, and time dies for proper operation
  • Perform die tryouts and test runs in punch press equipment
  • Diagnose and repair worn or damaged dies
  • Modify existing dies to improve performance and part quality
  • Maintain die records and documentation
  • Work closely with Production, Layout, and Press departments
  • Follow all ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 procedures and documentation requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Progressive, compound, and single-hit stamping dies
  • Tool steels, heat treating, and die clearances
  • Precision measurement tools (micrometers, indicators, calipers, gauges)
  • Manual machining: mills, lathes, surface grinders
  • Die timing, fitting, and troubleshooting in presses
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and part prints
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Education & Experience

  • Journeyman Tool & Die Maker or equivalent trade education
  • 5–10 years of hands-on tool & die experience
  • Experience building and troubleshooting dies from start to finish

Reporting Structure

  • Reports to: Production Manager
  • Backup Support: Layout Supervisor or Punch Press Supervisor

Work Environment

  • Industrial manufacturing and pressroom environment
  • Requires standing, lifting, and working with heavy tooling
  • Exposure to oils, metal shavings, and loud equipment
  • Shift: 7:00am to 3:30pm

Technical Machining Skills

  • Operating manual and CNC machines (mills, lathes, grinders)
  • Surface grinding and precision finishing
  • Tool sharpening and fitting
  • Blueprint & Technical Drawing Interpretation
  • Reading complex mechanical drawings
  • Interpreting tolerances and specifications
  • Visualizing 3D parts from 2D drawings

Precision Measurement Skills

  • Using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, dial indicators
  • Working within very tight tolerances (±0.005” or better)
  • Quality inspection techniques

CAD/CAM Knowledge

  • Using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • CAM programming for CNC machining
  • Modifying existing designs for manufacturability

Problem-Solving Ability

  • Diagnosing tooling failures
  • Troubleshooting production issues
  • Making design adjustments
  • Thinking creatively to improve efficiency

Mechanical Aptitude

  • Understanding mechanics, materials, and metallurgy
  • Knowledge of tooling materials (tool steels, carbides)
  • Assembly and fitting of complex tool components

Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
