About the position:
IntellectAbility is looking for an experienced Instructional Design Manager to help lead our growing team of learning professionals. This role is ideal for a hands-on, strategic design leader who thrives at the intersection of people, process, and performance.
As the Instructional Design Manager, you’ll guide a team of instructional designers in developing high-quality, accessible, and engaging learning experiences for professionals supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and aging populations. You’ll oversee project workflows, ensure instructional excellence, and serve as a bridge between design, project management, multimedia, and client strategy.
Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design, you’ll collaborate closely with internal leaders, clients, and subject matter experts to deliver scalable, innovative learning solutions that meet client expectations and align with organizational goals.
General Manager Duties (all IA managers)
· Review and respond to time off requests and formal requisitions submitted by your direct reports.
· Monitor work schedules of your direct reports.
· Review and respond to Daily Reports of your direct reports.
· Ensure payroll and PTO are correctly recorded for your team before submission.
· Conduct timely employee reviews and make recommendations.
· Conduct team meetings as needed to reinforce goals and objectives and set clear expectations about policies and procedures.
· Understand basic HR rules applicable to you as a manager (e.g., harassment, exempt vs. non-exempt, incident reports)
· In coordination with HR, suggest and monitor corrective actions needed on your juniors such as Action Plans and PIPs.
· In conjunction with HR participate in any terminations of your juniors.
· Conduct second interviews for new hires to your team.
· Make recommendations to your manager for improvements to the staff, processes, or materials needed to improve the area under your supervision.
· Maintain an ethical and positive working environment free of “office politics” to promote high retention rates.
Specific Duties
· Lead, mentor, and coach a team of instructional designers, providing regular feedback and development to elevate design quality and team performance. Success is measured by improved designer output, reduced rework, and achievement of individual performance goals.
· Own the quality, accuracy, and instructional integrity of all curricula produced by the team, ensuring every deliverable meets established quality standards.
· Oversee and manage the full design workflow, ensuring all projects stay on schedule and meet SOW commitments.
· Hold designers accountable for meeting deadlines, following processes, and adhering to quality and accessibility guidelines. KPI: Reduction in late or incomplete deliverables and measurable improvement in adherence to accessibility and design standards.
· Review, approve, and quality assure course designs at key checkpoints, ensuring alignment with instructional design principles, accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1, Section 508), and internal brand guidelines.
· Partner closely with the Director and Project Managers to plan resources, monitor progress, manage capacity, and proactively resolve bottlenecks. KPI: Predictable project throughput with minimal escalations caused by design-related delays.
· Collaborate with SMEs, clients, and internal stakeholders to define learning goals and translate requirements into effective instructional solutions. KPI: Positive client satisfaction scores and efficient approval cycles.
· Use learner feedback, data, and performance metrics to evaluate course effectiveness and implement continuous improvements. KPI: Demonstrated improvement in post-launch learner engagement scores and reduced defect rates in future iterations.
· Strengthen and maintain design systems, templates, and processes that support quality, scalability, and consistency across the team. KPI: Adoption rate of standardized templates and reduction in avoidable inconsistencies across projects.
· Stay informed on learning science, instructional trends, and eLearning technologies to guide innovation and best practices within the design team. KPI: Annual implementation of at least two new evidence-based practices or process improvements that enhance team output or learner experience.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
· 5 years of instructional design experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership, lead designer, or team management role.
· Advanced knowledge of instructional design models, adult learning theory, and curriculum development.
· Proficiency with Articulate Storyline/Rise, Camtasia, Vyond, or equivalent eLearning tools.
· Strong project management, collaboration, and communication skills.
· Ability to balance strategic oversight with hands-on support in a fast-paced, fully remote environment.
· Bonus: Experience in IDD, healthcare, or human services training.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
This role is primarily computer-based and performed in a standard office or remote/home-office environment. It requires sustained visual focus, strong attention to detail, and consistent adherence to digital accessibility standards.
· Ability to evaluate and design for digital accessibility, including color contrast, alt text, captions, and readable typography.
· Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods while maintaining focus, visual comfort, and ergonomic posture.
· Adequate vision for close work, color accuracy, depth perception, and adjusting focus.
· Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, mouse work, and operating digital design and authoring tools (e.g., Storyline, Rise, Camtasia, PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite).
