Controls Engineer

Integrity Resources
Pittsburgh, PA Full Time
POSTED ON 10/25/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/23/2026

The role

We're hiring a Controls Engineer to own projects end to end: from the first site walk and I/O list, through PLC and HMI programming, to startup on the plant floor and the handoff package the customer keeps.

You may run two to four projects at a time, talk directly with customers' maintenance and operations teams, and be the person they call when something on their line stops. This is not a desk job writing code for someone else to install. It suits an engineer who likes owning the outcome, not just the task.

Field service is a core part of the job. Alongside project work, you'll go to customer sites for troubleshooting, service calls and preventive maintenance. You'll also be part of our breakdown call-out support: when a customer's line or plant goes down, including nights and weekends, you may be called to get them running again, remotely or on site.

What you'll do

Scope and design

  • Walk down existing equipment, interview operators and maintenance, and turn what you find into a scope, I/O list and control narrative with sales team.
  • Read P&IDs, electrical prints, cause-and-effect matrices and OEM manuals, often for machines with incomplete or outdated drawings.
  • Define I/O, network architecture and hardware; review panel layouts, schematics and BOMs before they go to build.
  • Help estimate controls hours and hardware for quotes with sales team.

Programming

  • Write and test PLC logic in Studio 5000 / RSLogix and Siemens TIA Portal: sequencing, interlocks, PID and analog control, alarming, lead/lag and motion.
  • Build HMI and SCADA screens in FactoryTalk View, FactoryTalk Optix and Pro-face GP-Pro EX, including trending, datalogging and recipe handling.
  • Configure and tune VFDs and servos (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Invertek, SEW-Eurodrive, Schneider and others) over hardwired and networked control.
  • Integrate devices over EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP/RTU and serial; set up managed switches and distributed I/O.
  • Write reusable code: AOIs, UDTs, function blocks and project templates.

Migrations and retrofits

  • Convert legacy platforms (PLC-5, SLC 500, MicroLogix, S5/S7-300, PanelView) to current hardware with minimal downtime.
  • Plan cutovers around a customer's production schedule, including weekend and shutdown work.

Startup and field service

  • Run FAT in the panel shop and SAT on site; verify every I/O point, sequence and alarm against the narrative.
  • Commission systems and stay through the first production runs.
  • Troubleshoot logic, networks, drives, instrumentation and field wiring with a meter in one hand and a laptop in the other.
  • Handle field service calls: diagnose and repair control faults, replace failed hardware, and restore production on equipment you may be seeing for the first time.
  • Take part in breakdown call-out support, including off-hours and weekends: triage remotely when you can, travel to site when you can't, and follow up with a root-cause write-up and a fix so it doesn't happen again.
  • Perform preventive maintenance visits: program backups, firmware and drive checks, and spares recommendations.

Documentation and handoff

  • Deliver commented code, as-built drawings, I/O and alarm lists, and a short operator guide.
  • Train operators and maintenance staff so they can run and support the system without us.

Required skills/Experience

  • 3 years in industrial controls at an integrator, OEM or plant, with projects you took from design through startup.
  • Allen-Bradley Logix fluency: you can build a Studio 5000 project from scratch, structure it with AOIs and UDTs, and troubleshoot online without breaking production.
  • At least one HMI platform in real use: FactoryTalk View ME/SE, FactoryTalk Optix, or similar.
  • Drives: parameter setup, tuning and network control of VFDs on at least one major brand.
  • Industrial networks: EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP/RTU, IP addressing, and managed switches.
  • Print reading: electrical schematics, P&IDs and panel layouts; you can find a wiring fault from the drawings.
  • Field-ready: comfortable with 480V equipment, lockout/tagout, arc-flash PPE and plant safety rules.
  • Clear communication: you can explain a fault to an operator and a schedule change to a plant manager.
  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Valid driver's license, the ability to travel to customer sites, and willingness to respond to breakdown call-outs outside normal hours.

Preferred skills:

  • Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1200/1500) and PROFINET.
  • FactoryTalk Optix, including NetLogic (C#) scripting and datalogging.
  • Legacy migrations: PLC-5, SLC 500, MicroLogix, S7-300 or PanelView conversions.
  • Servo and motion control: Kinetix, SINAMICS or SEW MOVI-C.
  • Water and wastewater experience: lift stations, chemical feed, filtration, SCADA telemetry.
  • Recycling or heavy-equipment experience: conveyors, shredders, balers, presses.
  • SCADA and data: FactoryTalk SE, Ignition, historians, SQL, OPC UA or MQTT.
  • Machine safety: safety PLCs, light curtains, and risk assessments to ISO 13849 or NFPA 79.
  • Panel and schematic design in SOLIDWORKS Electrical (our standard tool), or similar experience in AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN, and familiarity with UL 508A.
  • C# or Git for tooling, testing and version control.
