The opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Consultant to join our Transactional Surety team based in our Denver, CO; San Francisco, CA offices or remotely in the Pacific/Mountain Time Zones in the United States. This role is responsible for underwriting Transactional Surety risks. The Underwriting Consultant develops and executes strategic initiatives to drive growth and profitability, generates their own premium through new business and strong business relationships, manages accounts, and serves as a senior technical resource and mentor within the Surety team. Some of the Underwriting Consultant responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Underwrite new and renewal transactional surety submissions for complex and specialty accounts, leveraging advanced financial, legal, and risk analysis.
• Make independent decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within the highest authority levels, ensuring compliance with Surety underwriting strategy, company guidelines, and state laws.
• Manage a profitable book of transactional surety business.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, producers, and clients, supporting growth, retention, and profitability goals.
• Lead strategic initiatives to identify and capitalize on market opportunities, including target account management, competitor analysis, and agency planning.
• Collaborate with internal teams (claims, actuarial, risk control, legal) to deliver comprehensive account management and support business objectives.
• Represent Intact at industry events, agency visits, and planning meetings to maintain visibility and strengthen market presence.
• Serve as a technical expert and mentor for junior underwriters and underwriting associates, providing training, guidance, and daily support.
• Participate in the development of new processes, products, and systems to enhance Surety operations and service delivery.
• Respond to requests for consultation from other business units and participate in cross-functional projects and committees as a subject matter expert.

The expertise you bring

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
• 7–10 years of progressively complex underwriting experience in Surety.
• Professional insurance designation preferred (e.g., AFSB, CPCU, RPLU).
• Advanced understanding of financial statements, credit analysis, and legal frameworks relevant to Surety.
• Proven ability to build and maintain strong broker and client relationships.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and underwriting systems.
• High level of accuracy, confidentiality, and follow-through.
• Willingness and ability to travel as needed for broker and client meetings.
• Adaptability to changing priorities and business needs.

Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires, but your recruiter will share more specific compensation information with you during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $150,000 – $199,000, based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Washington DC; our Massachusetts based offices and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $174,000 -$204,000. In addition to base salary, full time Intact employees are also eligible for bonus potential and a full range of benefits to include but not limited to:
