POSTED ON 7/23/2026 CLOSED ON 8/22/2026

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Scientist - Cryo-electron Microscopy position at Institute for Protein Design, University of Washington?

Company Description

The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington is a world leader in computational protein design, combining artificial intelligence, structural biology, and experimental science to create novel proteins that address challenges in medicine, biotechnology, and sustainability. Founded by Nobel laureate David Baker, the IPD brings together researchers from diverse disciplines in a highly collaborative environment to translate fundamental discoveries into real-world impact.

Role Description

The Research Scientist - Cryo-electron Microscopy will lead and support structural characterization efforts for computationally designed proteins and protein-protein complexes, with a particular emphasis on small targets (<100 kDa). This is a full-time, on-site position based in Seattle, WA.

The successful candidate will perform cryo-EM and negative-stain EM studies spanning sample preparation, grid optimization, data collection, image processing, three-dimensional reconstruction, and atomic model building. The position involves close collaboration with computational and experimental scientists to guide protein design, validate structures, and develop new approaches for challenging structural biology problems.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining and optimizing cryo-EM instrumentation, developing and documenting best practices, mentoring trainees, contributing to manuscripts and scientific presentations, and supporting the continued growth of the Electron Microscopy Resource Center.

Qualifications
  • PhD in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or a related field (or equivalent research experience).
  • Strong hands-on expertise in cryo-electron microscopy, including sample preparation, vitrification, and operation of transmission electron microscopes.
  • Experience with single-particle cryo-EM workflows, including image processing using software such as cryoSPARC, RELION, cisTEM, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience determining structures of proteins and protein complexes, ideally including small proteins or complexes (<100 kDa).
  • Background in structural biology, protein biochemistry, or biophysics, including protein expression, purification, and characterization.
  • Experience integrating structural data with computational modeling or protein design workflows is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and scientific communication skills.
  • Experience mentoring students or junior researchers and working effectively in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams.
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications in structural biology, cryo-EM, or related fields is preferred.
