How You Will Help the Team
The Applications Engineer will support the Center for Manufacturing Advancement (CMA) and the AMPRO Center of Excellence by leading advanced engineering and manufacturing activities. This role is responsible for overseeing complex CNC operations, implementing emerging technologies, and ensuring technical excellence and compliance across projects. The Applications Engineer works closely with machinists and cross-functional partners to ensure successful execution of subtractive manufacturing, inspection, and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
• Program and assist in the setup and operation of CNC equipment, including multi-axis milling machines, mill/turn machines, dual spindle lathes, and tool presetters
• Serve as the technical lead for tooling, work-holding, and CNC technology implementation
• Implement new and emerging technologies into existing and upcoming CMA projects
• Work cross-functionally with CMA team members and machinists to support subtractive manufacturing and inspection activities
• Ensure project compliance with applicable data privacy and quality standards, including ITAR, ISO, ANSI, and related requirements
• Create detailed technical documentation for processes, procedures, and workflows
• Track and maintain CNC-related technical project data
• Support technical activities for new and existing CMA projects
• Attend onsite and offsite stakeholder meetings as required
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Your Knowledge & Expertise
• Associate’s degree or diploma in Precision Machining Technology or equivalent work experience required
• Minimum of 7–10 years of experience setting up and operating complex CNC machining environments
• Extensive experience with multi-axis machining, dual spindle lathes, mill/turn machines, and advanced CNC systems
• Extensive CNC programming experience required
• Extensive CAD/CAM experience and knowledge required
• Strong working knowledge of precision machining principles and practices
• Extensive knowledge of cutting tool applications and material properties
• Experience with work-holding techniques and fixture design
• Knowledge of ancillary machining processes, including EDM and grinding
• Understanding of pre-process, in-process, and post-process inspection methods, including macro variable programming
• Knowledge of additive manufacturing, dimensional inspection, and NDT processes
• Experience with SPC, process monitoring, and data collection systems preferred
• Experience working in ITAR- and ISO-regulated environments preferred
• Proficient with Microsoft Office products
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Customer service–oriented with strong interpersonal skills
• Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
• Valid driver’s license required, with the ability to travel throughout Virginia and occasional out-of-state travel
