Position Overview
The Division of Water Resources is seeking an Environmental Scientist 1 to join its Jackson Environmental Field Office team. This role focuses on protecting public health, environmental quality, and Tennessee’s water resources through field sampling, inspections, and regulatory support activities. The ideal candidate will have strong communication, organizational, and technical skills, along with the ability to work independently in field environments and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Collect chemical, bacteriological, and biological surface water samples for environmental analysis
Perform sanitary surveys of community and non-community public water systems
Ensure compliance with federal and state drinking water regulations
Conduct fieldwork in rural areas, construction sites, and varying weather conditions
Travel regularly throughout a 17-county service area using a state-provided vehicle
Maintain accurate records, field documentation, and data entry into digital systems
Investigate illegal discharges, water quality concerns, and public complaints when needed
Serve as a point of contact for water system operators, landowners, consultants, and local stakeholders
Collaborate with internal teams and regulatory agencies to support environmental initiatives
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Wildlife Biology, Physical Sciences, or related field
Valid Driver’s License
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to read and interpret maps and create diagrams
Proficiency in data entry, technical documentation, proofreading, and correspondence
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work outdoors and travel frequently for field assignments
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with chemical or biological water sampling
Knowledge of macrobenthic invertebrate sampling and identification
Familiarity with laboratory analysis procedures for water samples
Experience working with environmental regulations or water quality programs
