Certified Histology / Pathology Technologist

Position Summary

Histology Associates is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Certified Histology/Pathology Technologist to join our growing laboratory team. The primary responsibilities of this role include performing all necessary histology procedures for the accessioning and technical preparation of pathology specimens. The successful candidate will perform a variety of special stain procedures; operate and maintain automated staining and coverslipping instruments, tissue processors, microtomes, and cryostats; and collaborate with the Pathologist to prepare frozen section slides. Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Verify the accuracy of patient information and samples submitted for examination, ensuring complete chain-of-custody and specimen integrity at all times.
  • Responsible for accessioning and billing of cytology and surgical specimens through accurate data entry into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); order and print labels and worklists accordingly.
  • Demonstrate understanding and proficiency in tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, and coverslipping of surgical specimens using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety.
  • Demonstrate understanding and proficiency in a variety of special stain procedures as requested by the Pathologist.
  • Demonstrate understanding and proficiency in immunohistochemical (IHC) staining procedures as requested by the Pathologist.
  • Freeze, cut, and prepare rapid H&E sections for frozen tissue microscopic examination using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety.
  • Check stained slides against paraffin blocks and gross dictation to determine completeness of sections; distribute slides and associated paperwork to Pathologists in a timely manner.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for immunostaining according to established formulas using analytical balances, pH meters, and other laboratory instruments.
  • Perform quality control on all histology equipment and instrumentation; document results accurately and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, stocked, and quality-controlled work environment in compliance with all safety standards.
  • Safely handle, recycle, and dispose of laboratory chemicals in accordance with OSHA and all applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain quality control and maintenance records within the pathology laboratory section under the direction of the Section Leader and/or Laboratory Manager.
  • Participate in the maintenance of monthly pathology laboratory statistics and reporting.
  • File and/or retrieve slides for slide conferences, old case reviews, and related activities.
  • File slides and paraffin blocks for appropriate long-term storage in compliance with retention policies.
  • Participate actively in continuing education programs, proficiency testing, and laboratory quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory leadership.

Education Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Science or Applied Science (or equivalent) and successful completion of an accredited training program in Histotechnology; OR
  • Two (2) years of histology work experience combined with an Associate’s Degree in Science; OR a High School Diploma with successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnology program.

Qualified candidates must meet one or both of the first two requirements listed above.

Certifications

  • Current HT (Histotechnician) or HTL (Histotechnologist) certification through ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) is strongly preferred.
  • Candidates actively pursuing ASCP certification will be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum of 1–3 years of hands-on histology laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience with automated staining platforms, tissue processors, and microtomes is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with LIS systems, quality control documentation, and regulatory compliance standards (CLIA, CAP, COLA) is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong technical proficiency in histology procedures, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining techniques.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and patient safety.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, manage multiple tasks, and work efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with Pathologists, laboratory staff, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to regulatory compliance, safety standards, and quality assurance practices.

Work Environment

  • Laboratory setting with exposure to biological specimens, chemical reagents, and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Requires adherence to all PPE, infection control, and safety protocols at all times.
  • May require standing for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks.
