Job Summary
The Residential Energy Auditor will be responsible for conducting comprehensive residential energy performance assessments and providing homeowners with tailored recommendations for effective improvements. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, strong communication skills, and a proven track record in the energy efficiency field. You will analyze building performance using specialized diagnostic tools, educate customers on building science principles, and propose a work scope designed to make the home safer, more comfortable, more durable, and more energy efficient.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform in-depth, on-site building diagnostics, including assessments of HVAC systems, insulation, building leakage, and the overall building envelope.
- Operate and interpret results from diagnostic equipment such as blower doors, combustion analyzers, manometers, and infrared cameras to identify air leaks and other energy performance issues.
- Collect and analyze historical utility data to quantify potential energy savings and return on investment for recommended upgrades.
- Deliver clear, concise, and detailed reports outlining audit findings and proposed improvement measures.
- Educate homeowners on building science principles, recommended improvements, and available utility rebates or incentive programs.
- Collaborate with contractors to ensure recommended work is completed according to quality standards.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of all audits and customer interactions.
Qualifications
- Certifications: Active certification as a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst Professional, BPI Energy Auditor, Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater, or equivalent DOE-approved certification is REQUIRED.
- Experience: Three or more years of documented experience in residential energy auditing or a related field.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. An Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., energy, construction, environmental science) is preferred.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in operating energy auditing diagnostic equipment.
Strong understanding of building science principles and construction practices.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace products.
Experience with SketchUp, CAD, or similar drafting software; and any energy modeling software is a plus.
Communication Skills:
Exceptional verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse clientele and explain complex technical concepts in an easily understood manner.
Excellent customer service focus with the ability to build rapport and manage client expectations.
Other Requirements:
Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and a clean driving record.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail are essential.
Physical ability to perform work in various conditions, including climbing ladders and entering confined spaces like attics and crawlspaces, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Compensation:
Flexible employment structure - this position can be filled as either a W-2 employee or a 1099 contractor depending on the right candidate’s specific goals.
Competitive compensation based on experience, availability, and throughput; annual range is typically between $50,000 and $85,000 with potential for performance-based bonuses.
