Tier 2 NOC SpecialistThe Tier 2 NOC Specialist is responsible for the administration and management of OARnet’s statewide IP/MPLS and DWDM backbone in a 24x7 Network Operations Center (NOC). OARnet maintains and delivers services across the state’s 5,500‐mile fiber‐optic network backbone, supporting Ohio’s higher education, K‐12 education, state and local government, public broadcasting, health care, and research communities.The OARnet NOC supports a diverse range of services for customers with advanced networking needs, including purpose‐built infrastructures dedicated to public safety and multicast video, research connectivity through Internet2 and other partnerships, and wide area network transport to cloud computing resources. Report problems in infrastructure outside of OARnet’s administrative control to external vendors and carriers. Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues by investigating alarm causes, correlating alarms with network events, and addressing the root cause. Coordinate the NOC’s response to fiber cuts, equipment failures, and last‐mile circuit outages. Ticket and track events in an ITIL environment.20%Propose, plan, and implement enhancements to OARnet routers and switches to maintain and improve the network. Perform system upgrades, configuration changes, and network maintenance. Enact network changes that affect equipment and routing protocols statewide. Validate equipment and WAN circuits following maintenance.20�velop, review, and implement Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for network maintenance and system changes. Write documentation for pre‐ and post‐maintenance checks, step‐by‐step implementation instructions, and pass/fail testing criteria. Contribute articles to the Engineering NOC Knowledge Base and train staff on NOC Standard Operating Procedures.20%Function as an escalation point for customer issues raised to the NOC by the OARnet Service Desk. Respond to outages, security issues, and performance problems reported by customers. Work with engineers and technical staff at OARnet member institutions to troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues that may extend into customer networks.10%Assess vendor maintenance notifications to determine impact to the OARnet backbone and network infrastructure. Evaluate customer service impact and notify customers of upcoming work. Customize standard notification messaging to accurately reflect work being performed and expected service impact.5%Other duties as assigned.
