Position Title: Life Skills Instructor
Location: Varies by Facility
Starting Rate: $18.00-20.00 per hour, DOE
Status: Full-Time or Part-Time
Schedule: Flexible; may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
Reports To: Program Director / Director of Operations
Position Summary
Insight Disability Services is seeking a compassionate, experienced Life Skills Instructor to support adults with chronic mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and related behavioral challenges in a group home setting. This role focuses on promoting safety, stability, and therapeutic consistency while implementing individualized behavioral strategies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide direct behavioral support to adults diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness and/or traumatic brain injuries (stroke, CVA, etc.)
- Implement and reinforce behavior intervention plans under supervision of clinical staff
- Maintain a therapeutic environment and use crisis de-escalation techniques when needed
- Assist with daily living activities, medication reminders, and support routines
- Observe, record, and report behavioral data and mood changes accurately
- Facilitate individual and group-based life skills development activities
- Support clients during transitions (e.g., outings, appointments, changes in routine)
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and interdisciplinary care planning
- Maintain cleanliness and order in residential settings, ensuring a safe environment
- Ensure compliance with Insight Disability Services’ policies, procedures, and HIPAA
Qualifications
- Required Experience:
- Minimum of 24 months experience working in a behavioral group home or psychiatric hospital setting
- Experience must include work with adults diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or similar psychiatric conditions
- Preferred Certification (Not Required): Mental Health First Aid
- 16-hour Medication Administration Certification
- Other Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation- Applicants MUST HAVE own vehicle with current registration and insurance, and will be subject to a current DMV report
- Ability to pass criminal background and drug screening
- Strong interpersonal, observational, and documentation skills
- Compassionate, patient, and able to remain calm under pressure
- Current TB
- Current Physical
- Current CPR and FIRST AID
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Group home and community-based environment
- May require standing, walking, lifting up to 25 pounds, and physical redirection when appropriate
- Exposure to unpredictable behaviors and situations requiring de-escalation
