Job Title: Crisis Intervention Specialist

Location: On-site, Perry, IA or Woodward, IA

Employment Type: Full-Time

Our Crisis Intervention Specialists provide direct, in-the-moment support to children (ages 5–17) and adults (18 ) who are voluntarily seeking help during a mental health crisis. You’ll play a vital role in offering safety, emotional support, and connection in a trauma-informed, no-touch environment that centers personal agency and recovery.

Our Environment:

Separate adult (18 ) and youth (5–17) crisis centers

Short-term, voluntary stabilization stays

Non-clinical staff work side-by-side with clinicians, nurses, and peer specialists

No restraint, no ADL (Activities of Daily Living) aid — we prioritize emotional safety and autonomy

What You'll Do:

As a Crisis Intervention Specialist, you will:

  • Welcome and engage individuals arriving at our voluntary crisis stabilization centers
  • Offer emotional support, grounding, and de-escalation techniques in real time
  • Monitor client safety and ensure a calm, structured environment
  • Document observations and interactions accurately, prompt, and confidentially
  • Support therapeutic group activities and collaborate with peers and licensed staff
  • Respond compassionately to all Iowa residents of all ages and backgrounds

Who You Are:

  • Experienced (or strong interest) in behavioral health, peer support, crisis services, education, social work, or human services
  • Calm, empathetic, and centered under pressure
  • Skilled at setting and keeping healthy boundaries
  • Knowledgeable and aware of trauma-informed care and voluntary mental health support
  • Flexible; working as urgently needed (including evenings, weekends, or overnights)
  • Comfortable working in a no-touch, no-restraint, recovery-focused setting

Required Qualification:

Staff providing crisis response services must meet one or more of the following qualifications:

  • A mental health professional as defined in Iowa Code section 228.1.
  • A bachelor’s degree with 30 semester hours or equivalent in a human services field (including, but not limited to, psychology, social work, nursing, education) and a minimum of one year of experience in behavioral or mental health services.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a non-human services-related field, associate degree, or high school diploma (or equivalency) with a minimum of two years of experience in behavioral or mental health services, and 30 hours of crisis and mental health in-service training (in addition to the required 30 hours of Department-approved training)
  • A law enforcement officer with a minimum of two years of experience in the law enforcement officer’s field
  • An emergency medical technician (EMT) with a minimum of two years of experience in the EMT’s field
  • A peer support specialist with a minimum of one year of experience in behavioral or mental health services
  • A family support peer specialist with a minimum of one year of experience in behavioral or mental health services
  • A registered nurse with a minimum of one year of experience in behavioral or mental health services
