Job Title:Undergraduate Academic Advisor 2 (Newark Campus)

The Ohio State University Newark campus serves undergraduate students pursuing any of the university’s 200 majors, including several that can be completed entirely at Newark. The Advisor 2 position supports students within a defined subset of these undergraduate majors.

The Advisor 2 role focuses on promoting student success through proactive advising strategies that help students stay on track with their academic goals. This position provides individualized academic advising, assisting students with course selection based on their evolving academic and career interests. The advisor helps students understand and navigate university policies, degree and program requirements, and other academic processes. The position also guides students in accessing campus resources—including academic support, career services, financial resources, and mental health services—to enhance their overall university experience.

The Advisor 2 completes and may help develop structured work assignments, applying advanced concepts and technical skills to routine tasks. The role involves working on projects of varying complexity with limited supervision. The advisor shares information on standard matters and may receive guidance from more senior staff as needed. This position requires applying knowledge of advising theories, practices, and procedures gained through education and experience.

Additional responsibilities include supporting student orientation by preparing materials and occasionally presenting to students and families. The Advisor 2 also teaches lessons in a student survey course using established instructional materials, participates in training sessions, and may grade assignments. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong understanding of academic advising services, a commitment to student development, and a collaborative approach to student support.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or 2 years of equivalent experience (Master’s required for teaching)

  • Preferred minimum years of relevant experience: 1-2
  • Able to explain complex information in ways that are easy for students to understand.
  • Effectively communicates program requirements to a wide range of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, and campus partners.
  • Demonstrates strong basic communication skills and an understanding of multiculturalism and inclusive practices.
  • Proficient in completing basic tasks within the Student Information System (SIS).
  • Possesses strong relational skills, including active listening, effective interviewing, and thoughtful questioning techniques.
  • Understands and follows FERPA Guidelines
  • Able to perform basic transactions in the Student Information System (SIS)

  • The salary range for this position is $44,400 -$58,000. The offer for this position will be based on internal equity and the candidate's qualifications

The College

The Ohio State University at Newark offered its first classes in 1957 with a mission to provide affordable, open access to Ohio State for all Ohioans. The Newark campus sits on 188 acres and shares the campus with Central Ohio Technical College. The two institutions have a strong partnership whereby they share all buildings and general-purpose classrooms, approximately 100 staff, operating expenses, and a number of capital equipment investments. Shared departments include Advancement; Business and Finance; Facilities, Planning and Operations; Library; Marketing and Public Relations; Purchasing and Auxiliary Services; Student Financial Services; and Student Life.

Ohio State Newark currently enrolls more than 2,200 students who are taught and mentored by 45 tenure-track faculty who are members of their university-level academic department. Students can complete eight bachelor’s degree programs at the Newark Campus and start any of Ohio State’s 200 majors. In addition to excellent academic offerings, students can participate in the Honors program, service learning, education abroad, and a wide variety of student clubs and organizations.

Ohio State Newark is situated near the Ohio State University Columbus campus, presenting great opportunities for new and innovative partnerships to benefit students, faculty, and staff.
