Advertised Job Summary:
The Special Advisor to the Dean for Career Development will build and strengthen relationships between the Rice School of Law and employers. The advisor will develop relationships with a minimum of 25 mutually agreed-upon law firms from the AMLaw 100 list to expand the Law School’s relationships with large law firms in the Charlotte, Atlanta, and New York markets, among others. In addition, the Special Advisor will connect with other firms and employers from a provided list of approximately 300 to develop an understanding of those employers’ needs and preferences. All this work will create a foundation for ongoing relationship-building by the incoming Assistant Dean for Career Development and Leadership.

The Special Advisor will also develop a plan for incoming 1L students to best position them for employment success in a rapidly changing legal employment market. This work will include advising the law school on current legal recruiting trends, particularly for large law firms, designing and hosting recruitment events, and including programming and events for incoming 1Ls and 1Ls during the fall. In addition to working directly with C&PD, the Special Advisor will partner with the Associate Dean for Strategic and Institutional Priorities, the Alumni Relations Officer, and the Distinguished Professor of Practice and Public Service to coordinate employer outreach plans and related programming.

During the appointment, the Special Advisor will assess the needs and structure of the Office of Career and Professional Development and recommend changes to the Dean, including enhancements of and modifications to existing roles and responsibilities. - The Special Advisor to the Dean for Career Development will work under limited direction of the Dean of the Joseph F. Rice School of Law to build and strengthen relationships with large law firms in area markets such as Charlotte, Atlanta, and New York. This Special Advisor to the Dean will develop an employment success plan for all incoming 1Ls and Fall 2006 1Ls to include recruitment events, programming, and direction to the law school on current recruiting trends. Finally, the Special Advisor will assess the needs and structure of the law school’s Office of Career and Professional Development, recommending changes to the Dean based on his or her findings and expertise. The appointment term is expected to be May 1 through November 30, 2026, and will require a minimum of two weeks per month, split between travel to law firms and on-site work in the law school.
- Must have a Juris Doctorate and 20 years of legal experience.
