Job Description:
We are seeking an Applications Developer Analyst III (Software Developer) to join the UF/IFAS Breeding Insight team. The project develops and implements breeding and genomic data management systems to deliver increased rates of genetic gain in agriculture. The breeding, genomic, and phenotypic data management systems include databases, analytics, and decision support tools for breeders. In addition to the creation and maintenance of tools, we also integrate and utilize a wide range of open-source industry tools and platforms. This project encompasses software development efforts, integration, cloud deployment, and focuses on ease of use for small breeding programs.

Breeding Insight is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Agricultural Research Service (ARS) initiative hosted at University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).
The Breeding Insight (BI) initiative was launched in 2018 to level the playing field in the genomics era, creating new opportunities for specialty breeders in assimilating tools, technologies, and methods to catalyze the routine and accessible use of genomic insights. We integrate phenomics (trait analysis), genomics (genotypic data), data management, and software tools to help breeders increase the rate of genetic gain and create more healthy and nutritious specialty crops and animals.

$90,000 - $100,000 commensurate with education and experience

About The Role
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
- Code, test, debug, document and maintain advanced programs or systems that make up the BIP stack under the direction of senior developers
- Develop enhancements that enable a positive end-user (breeders) experience
- Create and maintain applications for USDA-ARS breeders to use in their breeding programs to manage their phenotypic and genotypic data
- Collaborate with other software development teams to co-develop features needed by both teams
- Conduct maintenance, troubleshooting, migration, and deployment of existing applications (i.e., BrAPI, SampleTracker, FieldBook, and Grin Global)
- Analyze and amend software errors in a timely and accurate fashion and provide status reports where required
- Perform code reviews for peers
- Develop and validate test routines and schedules to ensure that test cases mimic external interfaces and support all client configurations
- Implement automated testing routines to test functionality and stress
- Document code and ensure code meets open-source standards
- Work with development and functional staff to reproduce and resolve issues
- Develop, validate test routines and schedules, evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, meets industry standards and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems
- Evaluate, test, and make recommendations related to new application development tools
