About The College/Unit/Department:

CAIS offers a wide range of analytical services including: 14C analyses by AMS; δD, δ13C, δ15N, δ18O, and δ34S by EA-IRMS, Total CHN, Compound-specific GC-IRMS analyses, Elemental Analysis by ICP-OES and ICP-MS, Ion Chromatography, 14C analysis by LSC, Isotope Analyses by MC-ICP-MS, and Scientific Glass Blowing.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

2 years experience generating & interpreting 14C and staple isotope

data from both modern & ancient samples.

Experience Training Others On IRMS Instrumentation (eg., Dual Inlet

IRMS).

Position Summary:

The incumbent is responsible for complex sample preparation and analysis, including elemental analysis and continuous flow isotope ratio instrumentation (TC/EA -IRMS, EA-IRMS and dual inlet IRMS) for carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen in conjunction with dating and natural product laboratories, and coordination of samples within CAIS for processing on EA/IRMS.

The incumbent assists in the training of personnel and students in instrument operation, troubleshooting problems when they arise, and works with the Lab PI and Lab Supervisor to resolve problems.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies:

Skilled in the preparation and analysis of samples in an analytical chemistry laboratory, specifically for elemental and/or isotopic content. Chemistry laboratory experience, preferred ISO accreditation experience.

Natural Products, Biobase, and stable isotope sample preparation and analysis using laboratory instrumentation to include:

  • AMS target preparation
  • IRMS
  • Isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS)

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Log in samples to ensure chain-of-custody requirements are met.
  • Ensure assigned project-specific analytical schedules are met.
  • Troubleshoot & interpret analytical results for assigned projects in conjunction with Lab PI and/or Lab Supervisor.
  • Adjust lab procedures for assigned projects in conjunction with Lab PI and/or Lab Supervisor.
  • Assist with development of new analytical procedures.
