Job Title:Research Scientist | AI Service Lead - Biomedical Informatics

Department:Medicine | School Biomed Sci - Biomedical Informatics

The AI Service Core is a new, strategic initiative at the College of Medicine (COM) and Wexner Medical Center (WMC). We are seeking an entrepreneurial and highly skilled Research Scientist to serve as the foundational member of our team. This role is a unique opportunity to build a flagship AI core from the ground up, setting a national standard for biomedical AI services.

As the initial hire, you will act as a "concierge-style" resource for clinicians and researchers, helping them navigate and implement artificial intelligence within biomedical research and clinical operations. You will bridge the gap between complex technical AI methodologies and real-world healthcare applications.

In this role, you will lead the technical execution of the Core’s primary service offerings:

  • Multimodal Data Analysis: Lead the routine and standard processing of complex datasets, including electronic medical records (EMR) and bioimaging.
  • Method Development & Implementation: Provide guided implementation of novel AI methods for investigators, particularly those with limited technical expertise.
  • Strategic Consultation and Solution Design: Offer expert guidance to faculty on AI adoption, project feasibility, and strategic implementation within their research or clinical workflows.
  • Collaborative Research: Support AI experts by offloading routine tasks such as data preprocessing to accelerate their innovation.
  • Operations: Assist in establishing initial service workflows and executing pilot projects during the first year of operation; provide ongoing leadership for operations and process improvement.
  • Grant and Project Development: Contribute significantly to grant development, securing external funding (e.g., NIH, NSF, ARPA-H), and managing the lifecycle of AI for Health programs.

You will work closely with the University-wide AI(X) Hub and other AI initiatives at OSU to ensure resource sharing and strategic alignment. Your projects will be reviewed by a Faculty Advisory Committee to ensure scientific rigor and achievability. This position is initially supported by COM development seed funding as we transition to a sustainable "pay-as-you-go" and recharge operation model.

Qualifications

The scientist is expected to have the following qualifications:

Doctorate (Professional) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Software Engineering: Ability to develop and deploy custom tools for research and clinical workflows. Commutations and Collaborations: Ability to work within highly interdisciplinary teams and collaborate with healthcare professionals. Grant Development: have experience or formal training in grant writing and development for health-related opportunities, specifically NIH or similar agencies.

We are looking for a versatile scientist with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) & Large Language Models (LLMs): Specifically for application in healthcare settings.
  • Structured EMR Analysis: Experience navigating and extracting insights from clinical databases.
  • EMR Build: Experience with building reports and implementing models within an EMR.
  • Bioimaging & Multimodal Data: Proficiency in processing diverse biological and clinical data types.
