Job Title:Research Development Specialist

Department:Health Sciences | Clinical and Translational Science Institute

The Research Development Specialist for the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) leads the development of research proposals through integrated project management with an emphasis on growing large-scale, multidisciplinary research grants and contracts, including OSU-led multicenter clinical trials, with large-scale defined as grants/contracts with budgets typically exceeding $500K direct costs per year. Based on regular review of identified target mechanisms or sponsors/programs, the Research Development Specialist also helps to provide early opportunity identification and work far in advance of deadlines (particularly for recurring opportunities that are targeted) to enhance success rates.

Reporting to the Administrative Director of the CTSI, and the Associate Director for multisite trials coordinating center (MTCC) (which is embedded in the CTSI), this position works with academic leaders and faculty researchers to identify target areas of strength and emerging opportunities and develop proposals that align with University, State, and Federal priorities. The Research Development Specialist supports early-stage identification, analysis, planning and development of strategic, multidisciplinary funding opportunities; Enables and enhances the competitiveness of research programs and proposals for external support through strategic, proactive and capacity-building activities, including funding opportunity identification, research team building and outreach activities.

Through engagement with faculty, the Research Development Specialist will enable the CTSI in achieving its research goals to build effective multidisciplinary research teams and ultimately contributing to the increased success in securing large-scale extramural research awards.

Successful candidates will be intellectually curious, self-motivated, and able to exercise considerable independent judgement with limited supervision. In addition, successful candidates will have proven ability to manage stressful situations that arise while managing multiple priorities under deadline pressure and be able to effectively interact with and guide diverse teams comprised of faculty, staff and trainees from multiple technical and academic areas. The ideal candidate for this position will have grant writing, editing, and project management skills and demonstrated experience with preparing PIs and proposal teams leading up to an opportunity.

Minimum Education And Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Advanced degree in relevant field is preferred. 4 years of relevant experience required. 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred.

Essential Duties Include

  • 50%: Grant submission preparation: Supports research faculty by coordinating preparation of large-scale grant applications to ensure timely submission of proposals. Coordinates activities with sponsors, investigators, and other staff as well as OSU entities (other departments, centers, etc.) in order to deliver complete application documents. Writes/compiles select portions of research and program grant applications.
  • 25%: Works with investigators to identify opportunities for extramural funding support and understand requirements and specifications.
  • 10%: Facilitates early stage multidisciplinary research team building efforts that facilitate future large-scale grant applications
  • 5%: Ongoing collation of CTSI metrics regarding overall research and program activities (publications, presentations, grant applications, funding, etc).
  • 5%: Attends institute and other relevant internal meetings; attends national professional and scientific conferences to continue professional development
  • 5%: Other activities to support the ongoing research development within the department as assigned.
