General Schedule
Position typically works Monday-Friday from 6am-3pm in-office at UCO's main campus in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Position Type
Painter I - Paint walls, equipment, buildings, bridges, and other structural surfaces, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns. May remove old paint to prepare surface prior to painting. May mix colors or oils to obtain desired color or consistency.
Position Level
Support I - Entry level, responsible for performing a variety of clerical/administrative support, or manual labor tasks. Performs repetitive tasks that are covered by specific procedures or close supervision. May compile data for budget preparation. Primarily responsible for executing routine procedures with direction from senior staff. Reports to a supervisor or above. May not supervise others.
Position Overview & Job Duties
Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting. Fill cracks, holes, or joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives. Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats. Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or other finishes. Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil or thinning and drying additives to obtain desired colors and consistencies. Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors to determine work requirements.
Applies coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings, and other structures. Smooths surfaces and removes old paint from surfaces, using whatever chemicals and tools necessary to prepare surfaces for painting. Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with the type of filler. Some drywall work as needed. Selects premixed paints to match existing colors. Paints surfaces using brushes, spray gun or paint rollers. Performs general clean up after each job, removing equipment, tools, and restoring area to organized manner it was in before painting. Performs duties and complies with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed. Observes, communicates, complies with and enforces Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) provisions; analyzes supplies and materials used in the performance, training and duties of subordinates of the trade. Available to help with or fully abate a facilities emergency. This may necessitate the use of a radio/cellular telephone. Further, a prearranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather. Will assist other shops in general manual labor on a regular basis. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
General education or vocational training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and be able to operate a typical motor vehicle.
Qualifications Preferred
Knowledgeable in sound human relations practices and establishing and maintaining effective working relations within the Physical Plant and UCO community, as well as outside vendors, in order to fulfill this job description. Willing to attend seminars to upgrade skills and/or obtain required training to retain certification relative to trade.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledgeable in the use of the tools and equipment used in painting and basic colors. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions. Sufficient dexterity and coordination to operate equipment common to the trade, especially trucks and industrial tractors. Reads, understands manuals and instructions printed in English and documents legibly in same. Good oral and written communications are needed to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. Knowledge of use and disposal of chemicals common to the trade in a manner which protects oneself, others in the work area, and the environment. Ability to work safely and be protected in areas with fumes or airborne particles and toxic and/or caustic chemicals common to the trade. Ability to lead people, communicate clear, concise directions and coordinate work assignments of subordinates. Ability to work shifts other than the traditional Monday-Friday, 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. hours; as well as other shifts and schedules for snow removal and/or other emergencies.
